A little research on the mountains of Nevada!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of Nevada on my recent road trip to Iowa. In Nevada, on I-80, I went over two passes, one at close to 6,000 feet and one close to 7,000 feet. This meant that the mountains towering in the distance above the high desert must be quite tall. I did a little research over my first cup of coffee this morning and discovered that there are ten peaks in Nevada that are 11,387 feet (3,471 m) tall or above. Number ten on the list is the "Ruby Dome," in my beloved Ruby Mountains, near Elko Nevada. I then read that Nevada is considered the most mountainous state in the US (except for Alaska), in spite of travelers' stereotype of of Nevada as nothing more than "a place to get through on the way to somewhere else." I'll attach a picture I just took of the Ruby Mountains. The folks in Elko told me that the road up Lamoille Canyon into the Rubys does not open until June 15th. Several Summers ago, I drove up to the end of that road (in August) and marveled at the u-shaped valleys, which told me that glaciers had sculpted the Ruby Mountains. The vegetation on the way up was not as lush as the mountain vegetation in my usual stomping grounds (California and Montana), but it was still quite pretty. It's fun learning new stuff!

Been to Las Vegas.. The most sought after place for a foreign tourist. But on the way visited Sedona, a city in Arizona. I liked it for all landscapes with red rocks and small red hills.

Great research! Are these areas thinly populated? Any urban centres there?

Yes, thinly populated. Most of the "big" cities are actually quite small.

@TheHorse Some mountain pass usually open after the 15th of June. I am not sure this will be the case this year, we are having strong thunderstorm and up there it snows.

I'm sure things are opening up slowly in Glacier Park Montana, where I used to work.

@LadyDuck Understood. When it's raining here, it's often snowing in the High Sierra.

So pretty! One day, cause its on my bucket list, I want to travel the mid west. More photos! Please. I only seen the southern most tip below Vegas, the desert, but I loved it! I had good hair days while there ya know, no frizz, but that is what I wanted to see while out west that trip. A little of the Mojave desert down further into Az. too.

I enjoy both the West and the Midwest. The Midwest (Iowa, etc.) isn't as "dramatic," but it's beautiful in a subtle way.

@andriaperry Before I'm old, I wanna see more of the South, and more of the far Northeast (e.g., Maine).

I'm going to go out on a limb and say early Summer (late June) would be the best time, There should still be some green in the fields and snow on the mountains. But the roads and trails will be open.

I was born in Nevada, I've made the trip back many times to visit relatives. I find Nevada to be peaceful and beautiful.

It's funny that it's taken me all these years to really appreciate it.
