One of my favorite places in Iowa

This is a picture of the stained glass window above the entrance to Herrick Chapel, the chapel at Grinnell College in Iowa, where I did my undergraduate work. The Chapel is one of my favorite places on the Grinnell College campus, and one my favorite places in Iowa. I performed with the College's Celestial Sacred Harp Singers in that chapel, played organ for my dad when he visited the College, and often went there to rest and reflect. One time, on a sunny Spring afternoon, a friend (an organ student--I studied piano) and I went in and gave a spontaneous bell tower concert to the campus. The organ was linked to the bells (which I believe were electronic). Yes, we were a bit rebellious in those days. I also took a picture of the entrance to the chapel. Significantly, the front door was open. I've visited churches in New York and San Francisco where the front doors were locked during the day. That just doesn't seem right.

Very pretty. My whole life the church was locked, due to thieves,

I find that sad. Who would steal from a house of God?

@TheHorse People who do not believe in God, or people like the punk that just got out of jail ( maybe it was prison) and walks back and forth throwing a knife while I am working at the rental across the street. People are horrible, unkind and pure crazy.

How beautiful is this wind. I have always loved stained glass. Maybe the doors locked were because they had theft in the past? People are so evil these days.

It's incredible to me that someone might steal from (or deface) a church.

@TheHorse It happens, and there are shooting massacres in churches. It is pure evil.

@CarolDM I blame mental illness for most of the massacres. We don't have a system in place that provides adequate care for our (severely) mentally ill people.

The churches never lock up the doors here, this is against the principle that a Catholic church must be always open to offer a shelter to someone in need.

@TheHorse It is a pity for sure. Old Catholic churches are always so fresh, I often go inside during my summer walks. I sit there for a moment to rest and cool down.

That's the way I view all churches. It's a pity that in some places the have to be locked.

Many churches lock up anymore due to vandals. It is very sad

What do the vandals do? Don't even "bad guys" pause for a moment to pay their respect?

I reckon we are spared this indignity in Grinnell Iowa.

No, it doesn't seem right. They were open when I was a kid, but with all the problems with people going in and stealing from the church, they started locking their doors. I'm glad you found the doors open and could take that great picture. You had quite the young adulthood. I didn't realize you were so multi-talented.

@just4him I wonder if I could live in a town that small again. I could semi-retire there and give guitar, piano and bass lessons. I'd enjoy the slower pace and the kindness of the people. But would I get bored after a year or two?

I was glad I coud go in to Herrick Chappel and just sit. The population of the town is about 10,000. I don't thnk they have to worry about angry teenagers going in there and doing bad things.

Even in my small town the church remains locked unless there is something scheduled there. I love this image. Stained glass adds such a feeling of peace to a chapel.

@TheHorse — here’s your lame “six degrees” music connection: John D. Loudermilk’s grandfather helped construct the chapel at Duke University.

Churches and cathedrals are often my favorite structures in any given town or on any given campus.

It really is a nice little chapel. I'll attach a picture of the front. Notice that the door is OPEN!

I agree. Jesus knocking at the door is over the altar, but the light wasn't right for a decent photograph.
