The Police Department and IRS Phone Scam

I have been receiving robo calls from scammers claiming they are with the police department and stating that if I don't call back a warrant will be issued for my arrest. I never called the number because an automated message claiming something so serious just did not make any sense to me. I decided to go online to see if this was a scam and found this story from NJ 101.5.com. It seems this is a popular way to scam people out of money. I found a similar type of scam where residents in my area, (Ocean County, NJ) were getting calls from people claiming to be from the "Sheriff’s Department Warrants and Citations Division,” instructing them to call a phone number to leave a deposit of $1,000 in order to cancel an arrest warrant for missing jury duty. The con artists use a technique called "spoofing," in which they are able to fake their number on a recipient's caller ID. It comes across as being very legitimate. Just in case you didn't know the police will not call you on the phone telling you that there is a warrant for your arrest. The same goes for the IRS. In my case, I was able to find these numbers listed online with a warning about them being scams. These scams were new ones for me? I do get other robo calls saying their a credit card company and I qualified for some special rate. I hang up before finding out what I've won, lol. Have you been a victim of a recent attempted scam like those I described or a different one? What type of scam was it so I'm I can be prepared? How do you handle these calls? Do you just hang up? @db20747 I don't think scammers care about the DNC list.

Your very lucky. Do you have a phone? Most of these nuisance calls are robo calls which cannot be stopped by being on a do not call list.

I did get the IRS call a long time ago. the person was a foreigner who could hardly speak English. Because the call was on my caller ID i redialed the number and told the guy he had better stop making these kinds of scam calls or i would have him arrested i never heard from him again. Even though we know these calls are scams it still can be very unnerving listening to their nonsense.

@dgobucks226 A friend of mine used to work for Verizon, so he may know of a way you can block these types of calls for free so, i will absolutely ask him and let you know. He once told me of the way but,i forgot what steps you need to take.

I am on a do not call list but those robocalls still come through. I wish their was a way for them to be blocked for free. I hear they do have an app for robocalls but I guess you have to purchase it. I have received one in a foreign language (I think maybe Japanese) on occasion

Many we receive here in the U.S. are callers with foreign accents. They are too busy calling us to bother you Just kidding. Not submitting your number is definitely an effective method.

I have had a scam call about that I can get a good deal on my vehicle insurance. I told them twice I don't have a car. I reported them to FTC. I also had the credit card special rate one too. I did once got the IRS one after I wrote about taxes on my blog.

Most of us are not gullible enough to fall for these scams. Unfortunately some senior citizens fall prey to these scams.

Well, that's one way to handle it! I usually do not answer either since my phone has caller ID with the name of my contacts calling. It's that one call your waiting for from someone important whose number you don't have handy on your list where I will answer and get that robocall
