I was Going to Talk about How I'm in the Mood to Get Some Cleaning Done Since I Can Now Put More Weight on My New Knee

...But, once I began writing, my experience after surgery took over the topic. Maybe I'll talk about cleaning once I get more done. This coming Wednesday will be my two weeks after my current knee surgery of my right knee. This knee is recuperating much faster than my first one did which was replaced two years ago in February. For that knee, I thought at first I had a meniscus tear and probably babied it for far too long to the point that I eventually couldn't straighten it completely and it always stuck out in front. When the surgeon put the replacement parts inside he also did some type of adjustment, which I jokingly refer to as my nip and tuck, which allowed the muscles in back to relearn how to straighten completely. Although with that first knee which was my left, I never got to any of the goals most patients see before they complete their physical therapy sessions. Even while in the hospital, the goal was for my leg to be at zero for being straight and at 90-95 while bent. I didn't get either of those while at the hospital nor after six weeks of PT as an outpatient. With this current knee, my right one. I was at zero and 90 before starting my PT sessions the next morning after surgery and I was at 95 after that first session. I will interject by saying this knee didn't have any of the problems with bending and extension before surgery although it did hurt a lot these last few months. But, I was also fairly habitual with going to work out at Planet Fitness twice weekly, which I know also helped a lot. I didn't do my at home exercises faithfully before surgery for either knee, though. I've been switching off between being in the recliner sometimes with ice on the area or being at my computer desktop. I didn't even try to get there until that first weekend, though as I didn't know how well I could get back up. But, I'm guessing that for the first knee I spent more time in the recliner or on the couch on several pillows because I had swelling not only on the knee but also in both feet. I'm sure I never tried sitting at my computer until after the first month. I believe that sitting at my computer, or I should say standing up after sitting has helped my right leg become stronger again supporting my leg while standing and the process we take for granted of getting up and down. At first, when I'd get up I could barely move. My walker doesn't fit close to my desk. There's not enough floor space and I have too many things in here. So, when I get up I hold on for dear life to the corner of my desk with my right hand while stretching out my left for the corner of the table. Then I move my right to the countertop. Within those few steps it's enough to gain strength to support my weight on both feet not just the left side. After doing that this past week, I'm finally to the place where I can almost sit down without having to kick my right foot forward, and I can almost stand up with my knee still bent. I'm not able to do it yet in any sitting position, but I'm getting there. I get my staples out tomorrow afternoon, YEAH!!! And, while it's not going to be smooth sailing from then on out, at least that will be out of the way and allow me to do more with my therapy sessions. Last Friday, I was at 100 with bending my knee. Their goal is 120 before I'm done and I expect I'll be there before then. Any Questions?

@LadyDuck I don't think anyone got that specific on where to walk. I knew walking was important. I wasn't in any shape the first time, with the first knee to walk that much so I didn't think to ask.

Yes I'm doing well although the Dr said I shouldn't be walking so far yet. Mainly around the house. And that could be more to prevent falls.

I'll be home and off work for three months. While I was cleared to drive short distance when I'm ready I was told I shouldn't be going on long walks yet.

I did find out I was doing too much so I'm be backing off on trying to walk outside the home. Maybe in another week or so after the knee heals more. To much walking can me may make it get unless inflamed even more.

@MarshaMusselman I would imagine that walking on uneven surfaces outside could possibly really set you back. My husband had to have knee surgery years ago as a result of playing football on a lumpy bumpy unrolled yard.

I have been going on twenty minute walk with a friend twice a week and found today that's a no no as it's too early. When they want us to move about it's in the confines of our homes probably to prevent falling

@MarshaMusselman That's most likely the case. I'm glad you're doing so well after surgery.

That sounds like recovery takes a lot of effort. Hope improvement has continued since you posted this. Today I am in the mood to be productive at home, so I better move before the mood passes.

Well I found out I was doing too much too soon, but I'm getting around better every day so that's good. I did get my stove cleaner than it's been in a long time since no one else seems to think I need any help around here. There's more I do needed to do and now that my husband is back to work after a small vacation maybe I can get a few more things cleaned. I got the majority of the papers that have gotten buried from my desktop and put them into the living room. Now I just needed to tackle them and soon.

@paigea they seem to grow in their own don't they? It's I would take time to file things away they wouldn't pile up so high.

No. Originally, some years ago I thought that's what was wrong with my knee. I don't think the miniscus it's replaceable but it can be repaired. My problem was arthritis and bone on bone.

That's some serious work you've done! I wish my dad would give in and get his knees replaced. His doctors urged him to do it ten years ago.

How old is your dad and why isn't he getting it done? How is his health otherwise. The thing I've found talking to lots of people, if he waits too long and his health takes a turn for the worse he may never qualify at a later date. Has he ever seen an ortho doctor about them? Most insurances wouldn't do surgery until after the patient does other measures first like maybe some cortisone shots and that type of thing, or maybe if he did therapy for a bit to see exercises he can do to prolong the need for surgery. I did that about then to fifteen years ago, got an okay for physical therapy. Had I continued the exercises I was given possibly my knees would have lasted longer than they did. How are you these days, Amber? I've not seen you about the site much recently or else I'm looking in all the wrong places..

Actually the living with arthritis was much harder and more painful than the actual surgery.

I'm hoping to get cleared to using two canes instead of the walker tomorrow too since that's about all I use for home and that's what I had to go to church yesterday.

Overall, I think most do. Possibly a large portion that don't do well done exercise in any way. There is a small percent where the wrong size gets out in but that's not very common.

Oh, I'm so glad that you're walking toward the road to recovery--- gently, slowly but surely. :-) Do you still feel much pain? Are you feeling much relief doing physio therapy?

Therapy can be painful but their Goodall is s my longtime mobility. The pain after s surgery is different than is ised to be. I was not expecting the pulling out of the staples to be painful but it was. Once my knee forgets about that invasion it shouldn't hurt much anymore.
