Question Of The Day: Favorite Western Movies

Did you know more Westerns were produced in the 1950s than all other movie genres combined. Movies about the American frontier, gun-toting cowboys, and horse-riding outlaws dominated cinemas in the first half of the 20th Century. Although the Western film has declined since that time this genre still continues to come out with some real gems. Pre and post 1950's many classics have graced the silver screen. What are some of your favorites and why did you enjoy that film so much? Here are five I really consider classics. 1. High Noon 2. Shane 3. Dances With Wolves 4. Unforgiven 5. True Grit (John Wayne version) What all of these movies had in common for me was a conflicted hero who overcomes his personal issues to triumph over the evil person(s) in the film. This flawed hero I wanted to root for in spite of his shortcommings to make things right and defeat the bad guys. I might also add the casting in all of these movies was first-rate. Now for your suggestions for best Western films? Source- Wikipedia, imdb.com Photo- Amazon.com

No arguments there! Gary Cooper in HIgh Noon facing all those outlaws when everyone else was to cowardly to help. Not many would have the courage or integrity to uphold the law like Cooper did. A real classic. And the same with Shane. Men of strong character doing the right thing! By the way, Were you a fan of any of Clint Eastwood's westerns. He made quite a few!

@JohnRoberts And he followed that line up with "Mother needs you." That kid was annoying but was very good casting.

Ah, Blazing Saddles one of Mel Brooks finest moments in movie hijinks. I also would put "Young Frankenstein" right up there too. The Monster (Peter Boyle) would look good wearing a cowboy hat during the "Ritz" dance number, lol. Yes, agree that was one of the Duke's finest roles in a Western. I also liked his performance in "The Cowboys." Boy, I really was one happy camper when Bruce Dern got what was coming to him Humphrey Bogart played a great role in a Western themed movie called Treasure of The Sierra Madre. That was such a well-directed movie.

Same as @CarolDM, I am not a fan of western, but I liked HIgh Noon. Another one that I liked was "Pale Rider", "Hombre" and "Once Upon a Time in the West".

@dgobucks226 I do not think I have seen The Outlaw Josey Wales, but a funny western was "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" with Paul Newman, "The Outrage" was another unusual western very good. Those are not the classic "Indian and cowboys" movies, there is a little more that make them interesting.

@LadyDuck I saw Judge Roy Bean a terrific movie. It is hard to avoid having violent scenes in a Western isn't it.

Sorry to hear that. The Revenant was a western themed film out recently with Leonardo Di Caprio in 2015 Not your typical Western shoot em' up. Have you heard of it?

@LadyDuck I absolutely understand how you felt. My father watches it all day, but thanks to God from a few years ago, we provided him with a TV in his room, so he had nothing to do with us.

i love ol' westerns, e'en the t.v. series 'f 'em. to pick a fav'd be most diff'cult. i'm told they don't make 'em oft anymore not coz folks dislike westerns, but coz they lose their 'flavor' if'n adapted to modern times (aka: language, gory violence). open range with kevin costner 'n robert duvall 'twas good. broken trail'd be 'nother.

Some great picks there! Especially liked your selection of Red River and Winchester 73. Jimmy Stewart was terrific in that role. That was one special rile, lol. Red River- great story about driving cattle to market. Montgomery Clift was excellent as Wayne's protégé and adopted son butting heads with him during the long journey together.
