Freedom of Information Act, UK

Britain have Freedom of Information Act to get information from public authorities, however.... this work on Private institutions? Or Britain still have information related to India when there was British Rule? Do members of commonwealth have any right to access this law? or something? Please inform if you know. I don't think there is way get info from private institution except with court order.

I only want to get information of an Indian Prince who studied in a Private School in early 1900's There would be no problem if information is provided. But is it possible?

@Gillygirl That is where it goes wrong. In government organizations, you apply through right to information act, and relevant information will be provided. But in private organizations, where many things can and do go wrong, we cannot access information.
