Disclaimer: The Red-Shouldered Hawk pictured is not our hawk, but looks a lot like him. I received quite a surprise this morning when I opened the sunroom door to let the dogs out for a little romp in the yard and saw, directly across from me, perched on the fence, our resident hawk. He stared at me a moment but flew off as soon as I reached for my phone to take a picture. He is a magnificent bird. We have watched him grow over the past couple of years. It is so cool having a raptor of his majesty sharing our woods.

We have a variety of animals living in our woods: raccoon, opossum, fox, deer, many types of birds, a number of snakes, and countless insects and spiders.

@DWDavis Do you have very many poisonous snakes?

@kobesbuddy Copperheads thrive around here. Very rarely do we see a rattlesnake or a water moccasin. I don't mind the copperheads as long as they stay in the woods. Knowing they are there helps keep neighborhood kids out. The copperheads also keep the vermin - mice and such - in check.

They are pretty. But not welcome too close here.

Do they go after your poultry?

@wolfgirl569 I worry he might try to go after Ace. He's only a 20-pound mini-schnauzer. So far, the hawk hasn't shown any interest. Nor does he seem inclined to tangle with either of our front porch cats.

@DWDavis They have. I have the runs covered to help protect from that. But they will sometimes grab cats also.

It is nice to have it. I would have the same feeling if seen one in my yard.

He's giving you a look that says don't mess with me but any small rodents are welcome.

If he likes squirrel, then he's in luck. We've had an abundance of squirrels in the yard this year.
