The Big and Visible water crisis: When would the world wake up!

Today I read about a family in a part of Western India as to how severe is the water crisis there. They only get a little water everyday. The men of that house sit on a cot made of nylon (Called as charpai in many parts of India). They pour the water kept in a bucket through a mug on to themselves. The water is recollected in a container below. They do not use a soap. Then shockingly, that water is reused for bathing of others and other household works. If we think that we are better off then we need to rethink. The conditions in many Indian cities and villages is very bad. Many cities are moving to Day Zero-Capetown like conditions in the next 10 to 20 years. World over, we might see more than 20 odd cities would face day zero like conditions if the present state and developmental model continues. To start with at least we can start collecting the rainwater in whatever way we can. Any thoughts?

Many. 1. Link rivers. 2. Penalize builders building homes larger than 2000 sq. ft., in an area less than 20000 sq.ft. Penalize paving of footpaths. Penalize owners building more than 2000 sq.ft. in an area less than 20000 sq.ft. 3. For those who have already built like that, penalize at lesser rate but this rate should increase annually at inflation rates. 4. Bring down population. Pak Supreme Court has already asked its clergy and government to do so. 5. Penalize both builder and owners if rain water harvesting is not followed. 6. Plant more trees.

@vandana7 also construction activities should be stopped, except for Hospitals or National Defense in extremely hot summers- may be May to July. And I am all for Rainwater harvesting. I even told my father to have it in our family home, but he was unconcerned and said it is a hassle. May be the central government can provide some tax sops to households for investing in rainwater harvesting. And one day I will have to tell my family members to give me some free time, and join some kind of a movement physically.

@arunima25 Thank you. But it won't happen. Arun Jaitley leaves the government allocated house to live in 8 bedroom house which will be again paid for possibly by government. We Indians are not royalties. We need to live as per size of our families. Does Rahul Gandhi need more than 1000 sq.ft. unit?

The situation became alarming a few years back but no actions were talked. Chennai is in water crisis and Bangalore too is on list of cities going towards zero day. So much awareness needs to be done. Every small step counts. Everyday I get into argument with my maid over keeping tap slow while washing dishes. We almost have a fight.

Me too. My maid is also careless. I showed her pictures of women carrying water and standing in long queue. Still it does not change her thinking or way of working.

@vandana7 yet it is amazing that many household helpers live in water scarcity areas. Yet when they work in households, they waste water.

@arunima25 all big cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore are likely to face severe crisis in next 10 years if current practices and trends continue. Unfortunately most people I come in contact with daily are totally unconcerned about water usage and saving water.

That is very bad thing to have gathered about the water crisis! In fact today Go0vernment is not giving permission to dig tube wells unless they have new rainwater harvesting projects in their building plan! But the main problem is implementation!

@AKRao24 governments all over Indian States need to save and store as much water as possible these monsoons. And we need to plant more and more trees.

@AKRao24 Yes and yesterday I got a Video of a Housing society in Surat in Gujarat where an elaborate Rainwater harvesting system is in place. I feel that people can take help of existing projects and incharges of those projects and implement in their places.

@vandana7 Yes they have to act now not sit back and do nothing! I understand that some states have already built dams etc causing shortages of water else where. This is going to be a massive problem for India if they do not contain it somehow!

This is very bad. All my life we have caught rain water in tanks to supplement the natural rainfall.

@JudyEv traditional knowledge in India was of saving water in Baolis (Storage Tank)and small check dams. Unfortunately in Modern day, such practices have been forgotten and massive population pressure, especially in the bigger cities is adding to the woes.

It should be made mandatory! Here, nobody cares Judy. Even those who carry water everyday a couple of floors - yes, 2 floors, enjoy the luxury of wasting it. That is why I keep telling Americans, keep your monies with you. People here need to come to their senses.

That is a good idea!! Rain water, well water and lots of conservation!! Light clothing that is easy to wash by hand with a technique that uses little water!!

@db20747 and may be irrigation methods (some being devised in Israel) where less water is used for irrigating fields.

This is a sad scenario. In my place there are vast waters. I hope that the government there will look into this problem.
