Who killed Harry Baker?

Harry Baker was on his normal rounds in 1958 when he went missing. The 61 year old man was a credit draper (he collected payments) with dozens of clients he had to seek money from. Harry was reported to be mild mannered and never pushing towards his clients who couldn't make payments. There were many accounts of his last whereabouts, but the most trusted is that he was seen talking to a man near a bus stop. That man was never identified. It was likely that his death was not hate crime related, though he was a Jewish man. It's believed that it was most likely a robbery, perhaps gone wrong. He was carrying £25 which would be about £484 in today's money. The perpetrators were never found, but there is reports of a man asking about the cost to repair a watch, one that might have formerly belonged to the deceased man.

It's sad some murders never get solved.

Especially the older ones before forensics really became what they are today.

@ScribbledAdNauseum So frustrating.Sometimes we have the hunch but murderers get away because the crime can't be proved in the court.

@franxav Atleast some cases get to court. There are still too many that never do, where the murderer gets away with it.

I am pretty sure he was killed to steal his money.

I think you are probably right about that. I'm pretty sure he was too. Of course, he had been strangled with pantyhose, so it could have been one of his female renters. The motive was still money related.

@ScribbledAdNauseum A man can put in his pocket women pantyhose so that the police will search for a woman first.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Women pantyhose are strong, often used to kill.

I am sorry about Harry Baker but I love the mystery of unsolved mysteries.

Yes, you can't help but be excited over this little mystery, even if only came about because of the tragic end of Harry Baker.

Sounds like he was murdered for the money! Quite premeditated so it seems! Shame they have still not found the murderer although it is unlikely that they will do now.

He was 61 at the time, it's very likely that his missus is also long gone, and perhaps even his children (had he any, I'm not sure that he had). There's noone left to want answers, except for us curious internet users.

I wonder if he was dressed nicely. Probably the killer thought he was rich, but got away with only 25 pounds.

He might have been dressed nicely, I don't know. It's more likely that whoever did it, knew him. Or knew his routine anyway. 25 pounds was a lot of money back then, I think the equivalent of 400 pounds today.

Just one of the huge numbers of murders that don't get solved. I forget what the percentage is but I think there are many more murders that remained unsolved than solved.

I have always said I would like to work the cold cases.
