The news report just informed us that so far this year 22 people have drowned in our province of Quebec. It made me wonder what happened? Why do people drown, what is the cause and how can one avoid drowning? * I once got a job and it was because the previous person jumped into a pool, hurt himself and because he was always playing games and tricks nobody went to his rescue until it was too late. * One weekend three men that I worked with, a father and two sons went fishing, the boat capsized and the father and one son drowned. They weren't good swimmers and were not wearing lifejackets. * Swimming can be dangerous so we need to be careful and so always practice water safety. (see attached news story) Note on July 9, 2019: The count has gone up to 30.
Quebec provincial police have identified a body that was pulled from the Jacques-Cartier River in Pont-Rouge on Friday

I can swim a bit but have a fear of being in the deep end of the pool and so I do the same thing. It may look silly to others but I don,t care. It's my life and I love it.

as long as we are on earth, we should learn how to swim very well, in case of necessity. And water is meeting another world where breath is not used, but gills etc to stay alive.

Yes, it would be good if we all learned to swim but there are some that try but can't and I'm one of those.

Some of my friends tried to drown me when I was very young and so it left a fear of water deep within me that I cannot overcome. They were just playing. What happened to you?

I learned to swim when I was maybe about 12, but am always careful - better not take any risks. Have not been swimming during some years..I miss the sauna though.. - Funny, the word sauna comes from Finnish I think..it was one of the first words I learned when I learned to talk..

It's good to learn to swim at an early age. My children are both good swimmers. I can swim a bit as long as the water is not over my head.

you do wonder why so many people are to stupid to live I mean why no life jackets just in case of cramping in water and not being able to swim.

We had our son in swimming lessons at a very very young age, and it was for survival. We had him in drowned proof when he was a toddler. When we used to go out on the boat with my little brother, there were always life jackets for everyone. And my brother always replaced 2 life jackets every year, so that they never wore out and wouldn't be able to provide flotation. The sun and weather can break these items down and they should never be taken for granted.

You touched on two of the keys for preventing drowning: LEARN HOW TO SWIM, always wear a personal flotation device when in a boat. Others are: always swim with a buddy, never swim unless you know what's under the water, and never assume someone is playing around if they don't surface in a short amount of time. The average amount of time a person will stay underwater holding their breath is probably 30 seconds or less.

People should wear their life-jackets all the time on the water. It's too late once an accident happens.

I am a fairly good swimmer but I got dumped by a Kayak once in a lake fed by snow melt in the mountains above our city. That water was so cold my body convulsed into a knot, I was close enough to the boat to get hold of it and I wore a life jacket, I am not certain if I would have survived otherwise. I mean I was only about twenty yards from shore, An easy swim, but my body would not respond.

It shows the importance of a life jacket when on a boat. Things happen that we can't foresee and is good to be safe.

Whenever we're at sea, I never wear a life jacket because I am confident of my swimming skill. But I never swim alone. And I know when I'm tried of staying in the water, I always get out and rest. Water can be a very dangerous ground and accidents could happen. I don't fear for my own life when swimming but I always have my eyes on my son even though he is a much better swimmer than I am.

I'm an excellent swimmer, and always use a life jacket on certain boats just in case. Both my boys and grandkids learned to swim when they were infants and served as lifeguards.

I could swim in a pool water just above my shoulder level. I don't dare to swim in a deep pool. The only thing I learn from my friends who are good swimmers is to have a presence of mind and don't panic.

I don't know how to swim..and I am very afraid of water..So whenever I go to lake for boating I always wear life jacket.
