St Bernadette - an incorruptible

While in Nevers, France, we visited the Convent Chapel where the incorrupt body of St Bernadette lies in a glass casket. Her body was exhumed several times and at one point washed. This resulted in her exposed face and hands discolouring and they are now covered in wax masks. Bernadette was born in Lourdes in 1844, the first child of a very poor family. At the age of 11, she contracted cholera and suffered poor health from that point on. In 1858, she received the first of three visitations from Mary, the mother of God, who told her ‘I am The Immaculate Conception’. She had no idea what the words meant, as she was mostly illiterate. When, a few years later, Bernadette repeated the phrase to the Bishop, it helped convince him that the visitations had taken place. Bernadette died in 1879, was beatified in 1925 and canonised in 1933. We visited Lourdes on our last trip to France in 2017 and there were thousands of pilgrims and tourists there. While on the subject of the ‘immaculate conception’, one school-girl, in a religious studies class at Vince’s school, wrote about the ‘immaculate contraption’. The photo is from Wikimedia. I have never been to Lourdes but have always wanted to. We instead went to Lisieux and did the St Therese sites.

We hadn't intended to go to Lourdes but suddenly found ourselves quite close by so we didn't want to miss the opportunity. I wrote about our visit there in 2017. Here's the link if you want to read about it:
We were so close to Lourdes on our journey through France that we decided not to miss it. We found a lovely camping ground and tried to catch a bus into town...

If they can't make sense of a word, they just seem to replace it with a word they know.

@JudyEv I remember my nephew, when he was a kid, used to say wa-wa for water. When he was looking for a flyswatter he called it a flyswawa. lol

@JudyEv That is great that you managed to get there then a lot here don´t have the means to be able to go and have to wait a long time just to get there although its not too far off from us either.

@lovinangelsinstead21 We were travelling in a motor-home. We found a campsite in Lourdes and got a taxi into the main town. It was very impressive - hundreds of people of course but very quiet and respectful in the main area - no shops or people hassling you. Back in the shopping area, prices were quite reasonable.

We hadn't really intended to go there but somehow we ended up close to it so didn't want to pass up the opportunity.

And why aren't others incorruptible, although there are few lay people who aren't. Maybe it's only the highly religious that get dug up.

I've seen the movie about her life a few times. You gave me a hearty chuckle with that last paragraph.

Her story is fascinating. The incorruptibility seems to raise a lot of questions in people's minds.

@JudyEv I bet it did seem surreal. That's something you don't know how you would feel until you experience it.

It all seemed a bit surreal. I kept to the back a bit but others were praying before her or saying the rosary.

With respect - I think you need to check your authority. Some authorities like nothing better than to spread false tumours - I mean rumours.

I would like to know more about this "immaculate contraption." Sounds quite fascinating! So, the body of Bernadette, it's on display for everyone to see what a 130+ year old woman looks like?

Yes, except that there is nothing of the woman to see. The face and hands are waxen and the body is covered up! You might enjoy reading about her on Wikipedia.

There are a number of saints whose bodies have remained intact for a great number of years.
