Checking Out Mom's House; Fed Up With the Brother and His Girlfriend

We made it to my mom's house this afternoon and was able to take a little time to look it over and test some things out.
The major problem is the electricity in the master bathroom. There is a wiring error or a fault in there somewhere. No electricity is working in there. It's not a tripped breaker or the reset button. We will have to get the electrician to come back out. I see the permit is still on the window so no final inspection has been done.
We also cut the lock off the storage unit and replaced it with one that cannot be cut off and nobody else can get into. I was really ticked off to see that the girlfriend had a bunch of crap piled in there and we could not see a lot of my mom's stuff. Also, my mother's good leather recliner was left out under the carport and is now ruined.
I will work this week with the two of my daughters that live in the area to get her carport cleaned off. They just left junk all over the place. By "they" I am talking about my brother and the girlfriend. I will pile the gf's stuff on the curb and tell her to come and get it or else the trash man can take it. I'm tired of all the BS from both of them. I'm not putting up with it and I will do my best from letting them get back in good graces with my mom. Of course, the dementia is working against her on a lot of this also. She misses her son and forgets that he has stollen from her, along with his girlfriend.
We will also have to start cleaning out the storage pod to find out what is left of her furniture. So far her new washer and dryer is gone that was donated by one of the Churches. This twit ordered new ones through the Restore Louisiana program. I guess the other new ones are at her house or she sold them.
My mother is upset that she doesn't have any furniture that we can see except for a cedarobe.

Yes, and I was told that it would take 4. to 6 months or longer to do an interdiction and cost well over $5,000. More like 0,00 to 20,000. I am just hoping that the Office of Elder Abuse does their job this time. I love my brother but do not love what he has done. I know my dad would not go along with this either. He needs to pay for what he has done.

@kareng I will disagree on the guardianship and I would go with getting her to put you as power of attorney while she is still with you mentally. P.O.A. gives you the right to make decisions for her but not be liable for any bills she make have now or in the future, meaning any nursing home care or credit cards, cars not paid for etc.
When you get guardianship her bills will now be your bills to pay, whether she made them or not, whatever her name is on.
I am not a lawyer, I learned this from experience.

I think @DWDavis had the best idea. You might want to consider it, especially with the problems you are having with your brother and his girlfriend.

@LindaOHio I would also be responsible for all of her actions. Debts, and if she got in car and into an accident and hurt others, I could be sued.

@kareng Well, so much for that idea. I guess a stout lock will have to suffice.

Hope you find some of the missing stuff. It is very sad when a child does that to their parents.

@wolfgirl569 She really doesn't deserve to have any of her stuff back. She shouldn't have left them there. She never lived there.

perhaps 'tis time to visit with'n attorney, hon. they should not've taken any'f her belongin's, nor stolen from 'er. perhaps ya can still get a power 'f attorney?
yup, i'd put all that'n the curb, too. i so despise folks who take 'dvantage 'f others, particularly the elderly.

She has bags of stuff she bought (the gf) in the storage unit. I have a good mind to go return for cash (if receipts are there) or gift cards and give to my mom to use to replace some of the things she lost. I just can't fathom doing this to your mother and still having the gall to "hang around" and ask for money, make her feel sorry for you, etc. No, it is time for some tough love.

Call the restore and tell them your mom has not received the washer and dryer that was donated and have them look into it.

@andriaperry I will be filing an abuse of the system with her name on it. I did the same with FEMA and nothing happened. Reports were filed with Elderly Abuse and nothing happened. It's sickening.

Perhaps if she understood that Power of Attorney has two functions and selecting a DPOA now protects her at a later date when she cannot make her own choices. Do you have DPOA for healthcare? That is separate from DPOA for finances in most states. It can be held by two people in fact. I feel so sorry for all that she has gone through.
