Eight Years

Eight years. That’s how long it has taken me to have a successful garden in North Carolina. I have tried, to one extent or another, every single year. I’ve had minor success with cucumbers one year and tomatoes another in the past but for every item I’ve managed to grow I’ve had at least three failures. This year I planted tomatoes, cucumbers, yellow summer squash, zucchini, banana peppers, and bell peppers. EVERYTHING has been successful. DInner every evening for the past few weeks has included fresh, delicious tidbits from my garden. Best of all, the local wildlife has mostly left my produce alone. In the past, I’ve lost most of what little success I had to the local population of deer and rabbits. I haven’t been very consistent at keeping the weeds at bay (I don’t much care for working out in the heat and humidity for very long) but the sunflower in the photo is a weed (perhaps more accurately: a volunteer) that I chose to allow to grow. Over the course of a year, most of the yard close to the house gets a liberal sprinkling of black-oil sunflower seeds as I use them to lure my chickens back from unauthorized visits to our neighbours. Do you plant a garden?

Some animal or bird will appreciate the presence of the 'volunteer'. And congratulations on doing so well with your garden.

@SophiaMorros My mother would plant sunflowers near her apple tree in the hope that the parrots would feast on the sunflowers and leave the apples alone.

There are actually a half dozen or so of those volunteers. I deliberates scattered seed over the raised garden area in the hop that the chickens would miss a few.

@SophiaMorros That is great all that you grow turns out. I am sorry that the deer and rabbitts spoiled things for you. Very nice sunflower you have there. I have never planted anything. I am not a gardner. I thought about it but it is just not me.

@SophiaMorros I don't blame you. I have never tried it and really do not want to start now.

I'm not an avid gardener, but I do like homegrown fruits and vegetables.

@sophiamorros I’ll be lifting my red onions next week a and have already lifted 30 bulbs of garlic. Congrats on your success.

No onions or garlic this year. Perhaps I'll add those next season.

I have attempted veggies in the beds around the house. Unfortunately we don’t have a lot of good Garson space due to having a tree smack dab in the middle of the backyard. Same thing in the front, so that’s not even an option

We have well over an acre and the only spot that gets adequate sun and is close enough to the house to deter the wildlife is a narrow strip on the south side of our yard. Actually, I'm pretty sure some of my plants are in the neighbour's yard.

Pests, I think a mole, killed the tomatoes. Rabbits ate the greens beans. I have some corn an bell pepper left. This year has been my worst garden in years. I am glad you have a wonderful one, finally!

I know how frustrating that can be. Our best bit of yard for gardening is the creek bottom (rich soil, and a lovely sunny cleared spot my his and creased for me). I still have blueberry bushes and bush cherries down there are but I rarely get any fruit. We couldn't even keep the chickens down there because of the wild life.

My garden is very tiny compared to the rest of my yard. We live in the woods, on a hillside. Very few areas of my yard get enough sun.

I plant a garden every year, I started 19 years ago, after we bought this house. This year the tomatoes, cherry and bell peppers, the zucchini and the eggplants are growing very well.

I've never had a greenhouse but I did use a cold frame for a couple of years. It has since been swallowed by the jungle-like growth in the creek bottom at the very back of our yard.
