Instagram opportunity!

As I was driving along a relatively rural road this morning, I suddenly came upon this field. It was a really cheering sight. I guess the poppies must be grown to produce poppy seeds, rather than opium! Part of me was almost surprised there was no-one else there – it would seem to be the perfect place for an Instagram selfie! I was glad there wasn’t though – I wouldn’t want to encourage selfish narcissists to trample a farmer’s livelihood. So I’m not going to say where it is, just in case! But aren’t they a pretty sight? They are very pretty indeed. Massed groupings of one flower are very special. We loved the fields of sunflowers in France.

I remember fields of sunflowers in South Dakota too! My friend wondered why they grew so many; I said I guess they are for sunflower oil. Of course! He hadn't thought of that - even though he used it to cook with every day!

@Fleura And for the seeds too I guess. It's funny what we don't think of sometimes.

@crazyhorseladycx You've hit the nail on the head there. Pitiful, that's exactly what it is.

I don't think people have changed much, it's just that in the past they were not given much attention for trampling a field of crops, but now they could get thousands of 'likes' on Instagram.

You are right, it is a large expanse. Many farms now are really big, hundreds of acres. It is no longer possible to make a living farming 20 acres or even 50 as it was just a generation ago.

I love poppies, they are all gone here, I picked up some pods to plant the seeds in my garden, let's see if it works.

@Fleura I got the seedheads from wild poppies that grew on the border of the road, my neighbor has beautiful big poppies, I will ask him some seeds.

Little One loves them too. On the way to school we pass one house that has lovely poppies in the front garden and I have to tell her that they won't like it if we steal the seedheads!

@fleura I wonder what poem Wordsworth would have come up with if he’d come across a host of crimson poppies instead of a host of golden daffodils fluttering and dancing in the breeze? Your pic is a beautiful sight to behold.

@Fleura Oh you need to take a picnic and spread a blanket in the thick of the poppies, and run barefoot through them, lie among them if you want to adapt Wordsworth.

@xFiacre Well that sounds lovely and romantic but I'd be damaging somebody's work!

I was glad I took that road! Most of the poem is non-specific in terms of flowers, just three or four lines, so I'm sure it could easily be adapted. Just trying to think of a rhyme for poppies (instead of hills and fills to rhyme with daffodils).

It is lovely isn't it, and the fact that they are not all exactly the same colour makes it more interesting.

Thank you! It's only the second time I've ever seen a field of poppies. Are they grown around your area?

That really is lovely. Nothing like the fields of flowers in England. Rape in the spring is so eye-catching.

That's true although I'm less fond of the rape, the smell of it is so strong and it catches in my throat.

Yes I'm glad I drove that way. This isn't something you often see here.
