Why do people avoid eye contacts and talking with a person?

Sometimes I see people avoiding eye contacts while talking and sometimes people would consider a person invisible while they are in group of people. Yet they do make friendships or talk to the person when they need the person? Why do people engage in these kinds of behaviors?

@ajithlal It also depends how you look someone in the eyes, "staring" is not polite.

I do not know but I find it hard to make an eye contact when talking to someones unless the person I am communicating with is telling me something important or urgent that needs my full attention. But if it is an ordinary conversation eye contact feels awkward to me to look at them straight in the eye. I also feel a bit off when someone is intently looking straight at me.

Same. I know they think it's rude but I just can't bring myself to look them in the eyes. It's very awkward for me.

@jiwonnie I think eye contact helps to have a good relationship with people.

@jiwonnie Making eye contact with someone with whom you are not directly acquainted is awkward in my opinion. But it shouldn't be an issue for friends and family. When speaking with your supervisor or other professionals, I believe it is crucial to maintain eye contact.

I don't mean to not make eye contact but I did day care for 14 years and then I was a bartender for around 12 years. My eyes always had to be watching to make sure everything was ok. I have not broke that habit so I do catch myself looking around.

It is good that you are looking around yourself.

I have been on the sharp end of that kind of treatment a few times - some people just blank others, even close friends, out like ghosts - really quite disgusting behaviour

That is considered to be impolite. I hate someone when talking to me he looks at another.

Some people are introvert. They try to find a bravado to speak with others.

Many times not looking people in the eye is a sign of lying, of course sometimes it is just cause they are shy or embarrassed about the subject that they are talking about. As you say there are many people out there that only want to talk to people when they need something, those are the people that I avoid.
