One Last Shrek Post

Three weeks and four days after the curtain came down for the last time on our community theatre’s production of Shrek the Musical I can finally say that I am DONE! My expense report has been completed and I have been reimbursed for most of the money that I spent. All costumes have been cleaned and those that belong in our costume shop have been put away. This afternoon I finally managed to get the last of the borrowed costumes returned (it’s amazing how difficult it can be, sometimes, to get people to take their belongings!). I thought of posting a photo of the coat tree that I use for hanging costumes at home with the two empty hangers currently suspended from one of the hooks but I decided that I would share one last photo of some of my work. That is our cast and a large number of the costumes (those who had multiple costumes for the production could only wear one for the photo). It’s over. It’s done. And I am taking the opportunity to do a bit of a happy dance. Photo courtesy of Annika Arin Towe

Wow... that is a lot of costumes to be in charge of! Must be kind of bitter sweet to know that the theatre is now dark and quiet!

Auditions for our next production start this evening. So the dark and quiet will be short lived.

@SophiaMorros I have not been involved actively in Theatre in a couple of years, but my favorite roles we're Ellard in The Foreigner, Donald in You Can't Take It With You, The Singing Bellhop in Lend Me A Tenor, and The Cabdriver in Harvey..... i really am not musically inclined but i absolutley love musicals so i was roped into being apart of the ensemble for several musicals to namely Cinderella and Urinetown....both phenomenal shows but my two left feet it was a nightmare getting all the steps down but i think i did ok....

Shrek was a bot of a challenge. The actor originally cast was let go 8 days before opening night. His replacement was shorter, heavier and had completely different skin tones.

@LadyDuck It was a tough call for the director to make but it was the right thing to do. There were a few very stressful days and at one point I was on my knees on stage during a rehearsal cutting Shrek's pants shorter while he was wearing them (fortunately for that character there was no need for hemming).

@sophiamorros Do I feel a well-earned rest coming on or a new project?

I won't be doing any costuming for a while. At the least I will not take responsibility for a whole show.

Thank you! It was a lot of work and I had significant help from three of my children and a couple of others. There is NO way I could have done it all alone!

I hope the stress wasn't so much that you can't be very proud of the part you played in making the performance a success.

I can look back with a certain amount of satisfaction...but the four weeks leading up to opening night were a bit of a nightmare.
