Traveling: Flying Solo

Since it’s summer, and by extension vacation season, I have seen a number of discussions about traveling. The topics range from where we’re going to where we’ve been. I hope you’re enjoying the daily discussions John has been posting about his most recent excursions. I’ve recently taken a couple of jaunts (unintentionally going to many of the same places he recently visited), so I want to talk about how I travel. Recently Lori asked about traveling companions, saying she enjoys going places with her sister-in-law. John and I both mentioned we “fly solo.” NOT flying as in taking a plane but traveling. WHY? I like the spontaneity of it. John meticulously plans his long travels (which is understandable, lest you find yourself Griswold’d). I haven’t been on a long trip for anything except a concert in a long time, so I have enjoyed the luxury of seeing a brown informational sign, saying “Hmm, that sounds interesting,” and following it. On my trip to Memphis the only thing I had in mind to absolutely see was Mud Island. And, although I have vastly improved over the years, I’m an impatient person. I went to a show with some friends, and it took them nearly two hours to get ready. That’s their style, but it isn’t mine. There’s more to tell in future discussions. I hope John will talk about his planning as well. I think the more ideas presented the better someone’s vacation can be! And here’s the obligatory Poco song.....

We mostly prefer to travel alone - as in a couple going solo. I think we are getting more and more set in our ways as we get older and maybe we're not as adaptable as we used to be.

I don't think I could travel alone to a new place. Cozumel I could go to easily solo

You are really stretching it to sneak in Poco! When you take a long distance road trip, you have to have it planned out because there is no easy doubling back at another time. It's to get the maximum for the time and funds allowed.

I used to travel for business (a lot) and planned everything. Now, I travel with my wife and we don't plan everything. Not sure which way I like better.
