Movie Night

It’s Friday night and my husband is relaxing in front of a movie. He has a few favourites that he has watched many, many times over the years. Some of his favourites are seasonal movies. Every year during the Thanksgiving holiday he watches Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, he watches National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, and (if he has time) It’s a Wonderful Life. He also has a few space-race related movies that he particularly enjoys. With the fiftieth anniversary of the moon landing, there has been a lot of chatter about NASA and the events that occurred outside of earth’s atmosphere. This evening he’s watching October Sky. It’s a good movie that is based on a true story. I’ll be sort of watching it with him. But, in all honesty, the list of movies that I am willing to watch more than twice is very short (usually on the second viewing I start really noticing historical inaccuracies and costuming/set flaws). Some of the movies that my husband loves I have come to absolutely despise. Do you have favourite movies that you watch over and over again or are you a one and done kind of person? The photo? That's my man!

I watch movies I like over and over a lot. I like watching Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Rocky 1-4, Jaws 1 and 2, Office Space, Uncle Buck, Speed, Kelly's Heroes, the first Dirty Harry, My Cousin Vinny, and The Wedding Singer. I've seen all of these movies a million times.

I finally watched Jaws the whole way through. It's another one that my husband watches over and over again. Almost 30 years of seeing bits and pieces of that movie and I finally sat through it from beginning to end this past spring.

There are a few movies that I have watched more than ounce, but just like you I start to notice mistakes and inaccuracies after the first time.

@SophiaMorros When the movie is over I start to discuss with my husband all what I heard (or have seen) that makes no sense at all.

I'm really bad about that with our theatre productions. I usually only watch the final dress rehearsal but some times I hear large portions of the script over and over again and start to be really bothered by things that don't make sense.

aw, i 'dore "its's a wonderful life" 'n get a tad moody if'n i miss such when 't airs. i reckon a smart gal'd purchase such? the hubs here 'tis prone to puttin' movies'n, then fallin' to sleep. some i've seen so many times i could prolly write out the whole script! many 'f which i disilked the 1st go 'round. some i've lost fondness fer 'fter the 8th time. i confess that when he goes huntin' this year, his movie collection 'tis gonna diminish greatly :) he'll ne'er notice half 'f 'em gone.

When we moved several years ago I got rid of almost all of the VHS movies and we've bought very few on DVD so our collection is pretty limited. My husband owns most of his favourites but when he suggests buying something new I'll either rent it from Redbox for him or see if I can borrow it from the library.

I don't mind It's a Wonderful Life...but I've come to absolutely despise the other holiday movies I listed. Familiarity breeds contempt...

@SophiaMorros That is very true!! i don't really care for The Christmas Story just because it's so overplayed these days i used to like it, but as you say to much of something turns you off sometimes.... i also love White Christmas because it reminds me of my Granny it was her favorite.

There are a few movies all watch more than once but the ones that I am willing to sit through once every year are few and far between. And even then, I usually am working on some hand sewing or some other project while the movie is playing.

I usually don't like seeing the same movie a second time but sometimes the new movies aren't that great and I'm stuck. Since my memory isn't that great these days, I can watch old movies again as I have forgotten most of them.

@sophiamorros Most movies to my mind ought really never to have been made and I was going to say that I never re-watch any, but when I think of it I do indeed watch plenty over again, and by choice. I can’t get enough of French and Italian films, least ways the very good ones.

There are a few movies I like to watch a second time. I find I pick up a lot of extra stuff second time around.

I've watched both of those and enjoyed them and I would willingly sit through either of them a second time (it's been YEARS since I watched them) but I couldn't watch them over and over again the way my husband does with his favourites.
