Things that bring memories. My mother´s silverware.

A week ago, I invited my brother for dinner. I remember I wrote here about what I served, but I didn´t tell you how happy he was to be served in some dishes that were my mother´s. She gave them to me when I got married (over 55 years ago) and he had never seen them since. What happened so long ago was that a maid fell into the shelf where I had placed the dishes and broke a lot of them. I bought then first one set and then another, as they broke. And those dishes left, that reminded me of my childhood, were left carefully in yet another shelf for decades. I did not use them. Lately I have been thinking about how stupid it is to take so much care about things (by putting them away and not using them) instead of weaving them into our life. And so, when my brother came, I served him in those plates he had nor seen since he was a child. And he was moved almost to tears and the dinner was a success in spite of our having some issues between us. I never dared use my Czechoslovakian glasses that my mother had handed me. And most of them were then broken in an earthquake in 1985. Was it worth it? At least I will start using those heirlooms that I have put away for a long time. How about you? Do you use them or do you put them away to use in some future?

For some years now, we have been using our 'treasures' such as they are and gaining pleasure from them on many occasions. And, surprisingly, we've broken very few of them.

I do not have any heirlooms. Just my own things that evoke memories.

It is really sad that such vintage Czech glasses got broken in an earthquake.

I have begun to use the things I have collected and treasure. I finally decided that I should enjoy them the way they were meant to be enjoyed.
