It's In The Tree

I don't know what 'it' is, but 'it' sure had Ginger's attention this morning. 'It' was either a squirrel or a bird. Squirrels are abundant hereabouts. Our woods have birds in great number and variety. This morning we heard a woodpecker hard at work. We couldn't see the woodpecker and don't know what type it was. There are, I believe, several types that inhabit our area. I do not think it was a woodpecker drawing Ginger's attention as we heard no telltale knocking on wood. Shortly after I took the photo, Ginger grew bored with whatever it was and came to the back door barking for admittance to the house. If you have a dog, or a cat, have you ever seen it concentrate on something you couldn't see with laser-like precision?

I feel sure it was a squirrel. Ginger doesn't usually notice birds. Odd, considering she's a bird dog.

My mini-schnauzer is good for that. He'll stand in the door and bark at phantoms.

Yes, just wrote about the homeless man but I do so many hard to keep up for people. My dog saw a homeless man hiding and has been doing it for years, Dog would go crazy. There is someone right there, listen to me. Sure enough homeless man became so nervous he finally stepped out to get my dog to stop making me crazy. The neighbor lets a homeless man sleep at his place sometimes. I am cool with it and would have never known if mr Alpha did not call it out.

I imagine the scent alerted your dog that there was someone different there who the dog thought didn't belong there.

With both at times. The horses will do it too.

I wonder if the horses hear something we can't hear.

@wolfgirl569 We had a doe nest in our woods with her fawn one year. You could just see her from our fence. Poor Ginger went nuts barking at her. The doe never seemed bothered. It was as if she knew the fence protected her.

It makes you wonder what they can see that we cannot.

He looks so engrossed. Dogs often get attracted to birds, squirrels or bees. My dog Topaz loved to chase butterflies.

Ginger does love trying to catch bees. We discourage her from doing this.

Yes, that does indeed happen. In fact one night, the cat was dozing in the chair and suddenly sprang up and made a beeline for the windows in front of the deck. I turned the light on and looked and saw nothing..however, he did it again, so something must have been out there..what it was..I still don't know.

It can be a spooky feeling because you know they are reacting to something.

What kind of doggie is yours? My brother's border collie used to herd trees to make sure they didn't move.

Ginger is a Brittany. She's supposedly a bird dog but usually ignores birds and digs after moles and chases rabbits.

My orange cat used to watch the TV. He would be fascinated by it.

It tickles me when something on TV gets an animal's attention. Ace will start barking back if a dog is barking on TV.

@DWDavis I agree with you Ginger looks interested in something out there. My cat Sophie will sit at the door to the bedroom where the air purifier is and just stare at it but she will not go in when I suggest she do.

Our cat Tiger was like that. He'd spend hours watching the birds and animals in the yard.

Certainly, dogs can get realy focussed on various items. And here are my ponies focussed on a bucket of carrots that they couldn't quite reach! We didn't make them wait too long - just long enough to get this great photo.
