Possum Problem

I was sitting in the dark, working on the computer. I heard a noise in my garbage and turned on the light. A large snake was sticking half out. I start waving at it with a large envelope and suddenly it turned around and looked at me with its possum eyes. Yikes!
I have lived here for years and never had a possum problem before. I think the big one has babies hidden somewhere but I have seen other different sized ones here and there. They stink and chew things causing a lot of damage.
Have you had possums invade? How did you handle it? I don't want to hurt them, I just want them gone. If you have suggestions, please tell me.

I only had a possum problem one time. I just set out some raccoon traps and caught them (it was a momma and her 5 babies), and then I just relocated them to some woods far away from my house. End of possum problem.

@akalinus Hmmm....short of killing them, I got nothing else for you! Unless, of course, you want to pay a private trapper to come get them, but that will cost you money!

@birjudanak Raccoons will do anything for food. They run in family groups and will harass people, raid garbage cans, and destroy things with their chewing. They also can carry rabies.

@akalinus yes and strictly, the American ones are opossums, while the Australian ones are a marsupial called a possum because it looks like an opposum but they are not related directly

I am also having possum trouble. I put some rat poison out to see if they will eat that and at least get sick from that.

poor possum, they've such a bad rap. really they'd be quite helpful'n the ecosystem. eatin' lots 'f ticks'n other undesirables. there'd be many ways to deter 'em 'round yer place. those motion sensor sonar thingies 're purty neat, takin' care to scare off most critters. put a bungee cord'n yer trash can 'til ya figure somethin' out.

@crazyhorseladycx I saw this insect dancing on top of one that was plugged in. Those things cost a lot too.

Must be something in the air because the other night when I walked my dog I heard this noise coming from the outside trash can and I walked up to it to find a baby possum in it.
