More Possum Problems

The possum problem is only getting worse. The other night, there were two of them tearing up my kitchen cupboards. They ripped open my ramen noodles and gorged themselves on a box of cereal. At least, the noodles are cheap. These possums were different from the other ones I have seen. They were much darker, a dark gray or black even. They looked different, too. I wonder if they were possums at all or some other animal. I yelled at them and they just gave me dirty looks. What kind of animal is possum shaped but looks different? I wish I had thought to get a photo of them. Help! Any suggestions short of declaring my place a wildlife sanctuary would be welcome.

Hell, they could be rats. But they'd be a bit smaller than an opossum. Yeah, if you could get a picture I might be able to identify it. That being said, have you tried live traps? And it is very unusual for an opossum to enter a house. In the five years I was in pest control I never once encountered a call where someone had an opossum in their house, or in a building for that matter. Racoons a couple of times. But never an opossum.

@porwest I think it was hungry and that overrode safety. I really don't understand why they think my place is a cafe. We live near fields and pastures and groves, even some wooded areas. Why can't they find their own dinner outside?

@akalinus That's the other thing that leads me to believe it is not an opossum. Generally an opossum will not immediately try to flee. It will stop and bare its teeth, and maybe hiss—but they are generally harmless unless you corner it. A rat is more likely to scurry.

Oh my goodness, I hope you can find a solution soon. I hope it is not rats. Maybe it is time to call the Orkin man.

I did not hear anything last night. My food is behind doors they can't open now. I hope they stay away. I have not been sleeping much because every noise sounds like they are coming back or trying to get in. I wake up and start poking places with a broom or large stick. Does not make me feel great when I have to get up in the morning.

@CarolDM I don't know what to do. I am calling a pest service tomorrow but they probably charge a lot. There is no guarantee that more won't come in later.

Who knew there is Opossums which look like possums but are not. Its either that or internet messing with me. That could be a great joke. What animals look like skunks but are not skunks. Oskunks. Look it up, ha, made you look.

I did look for animals that might be possums but aren't. That did not work too well.

@crossbones27 I live in Florida. Anything is possible. People let exotic animals loose all the time when they can't care for them.

@akalinus Indeed and believe your state is where they like to smuggle all the exotic animals.

May be that if they look different they are not at all possums.

@akalinus It can be an opossum, that is darker than a possum, they are similar but not identical.

@LadyDuck I got a good look at the one that was destroying my kitchen when I got back from church last night. It had mixed black and dark brown fur and had a possum face. It really trashed the place. I guess it was mad because all packages of food were put away behind doors.

There are some gray-faced possums but they're in Australia @akalinus . Are you sure they weren't raccoon's?

I was wondering about that but I did not see the 'bandit' face that raccoons have. I don't know. I am in Florida, USA, not Australia.

@nanette64 There could be a mad scientist living here or nearby. I hope there will be no Frankenbunny.

@akalinus I guess we don't know for sure if maybe there's been some cross-breeding going on.

No, they have possum faces. Some people make them into pets but I don't want to do that. I don't want to hurt them. I just want them gone.

@Nevena83 I have not heard them in a few nights now. Maybe they finally understand that there is no garbage and no food that they can get into.

They are probably like any in the US. They probably have them where you live but they don't like to be around dogs and cats.
