Hearing music from your past

Sometimes I will hear a piece of music that takes me way back into my past and brings back precious memories. It occurs to me that at the time I may not have particularly liked it but when I hear it many years later it takes on new meaning. It isn't just a record that was about at the time but one that takes you right back into times gone by and can remind you of good or bad experiences. I guess the very young have yet to experience this feeling of nostalgia but as I grow older I experience it more and more.

mother found an old songbook and was singing the first lines of song after song after song. then she called her sister to tell her what she's doing and they started going down memory lane and laughing a lot.

How lovely. The older you are the more memories you have. I suppose that's one advantage to growing older!

I am also experiencing nostalgia more and more. I like to listen to the musics of the 60's, my favorite years.

Mine too. I was born in 1950 so my growing up years from childhood to adulthood were in the 60s.

Thank you. I think it's something we get to realise when we grow older as we have more memories to fall back on.

It's a strange kind of sensation. Takes you back to a time you thought you had forgotten.

two nights ago i was at the concert of an artist i used to like when i was little (even though he's like 20+ years older than me) and when he sang those songs i used to listen to as a child, i was so happy.

I would say it's more it nostalgic. Bring back past memories and feelings as well. For some people a simple song wont have that effect, but to some it triggers back all those memories. I get it quite often, especially those song on the radio from my childhood days.

Yes I get that a lot now. Sometimes the memories are happy but sometimes sad.

That's the reason why I don't listen to certain songs. For the reason that I don't want to remember certain people.

@sprite1950 When I first came to live in Israel I would go on the bus and hear old songs sung in English and I thought that was something and really would have wanted to sing a long but I am sure the passengers would give me a dirty look or maybe join in too. It was nice listening to them. I am surprised that the bus drivers would not have Hebrew music on instead.

@sprite1950 Or thrown me off the bus because I cannot sing worth a darn. I may have ruined the song by singing along.

When I listen to Oldies it registers a good feeling of summers past, high school/college years and concerts I went to. Playing those songs again elevates me into a great mood!
