Memories

I don't want to go way back to the days when I played in the dirt and picked all the green tomatoes off the vines and got chased by my father...but I did want to go back to the days of summer when school was out and we were allowed to play until the street lights came on and then on into the winter with snow and more fun. I remember putting on my skates (see above) with a skate key and skating on the rough sidewalk until my legs felt like they were vibrating hours later. Then one skate would come off; and I'd have to walk with one skate on and one off until I could reattach the loose one. I'd ride my bike around our block. We'd make puppets and have a show. When the blackberries ripened on the huge bushes at the end of our street, we'd eat our fill and then fill our containers to take home. We would swim in the neighbor's above-ground pool (we thought they must be rich!) until our skin was wrinkled. We'd get so hot and thirsty we'd drink from the garden hose or directly from the outdoor spigot. We played jump rope. We'd stand and eat the ripe seeds out of the huge yellow sunflowers planted along our driveway. I'd climb trees and annoy my friend's older sister. The street lights would come on; we'd be red-faced and sweating but didn't want to go in. Shortly you'd hear the mothers yelling our names out the first and second-floor windows (we lived on the second floor of a three-story home). "Linnn-daaaaa!!!!" And one by one we'd all head inside. In the winter we'd play outside until we couldn't feel our hands and feet, making snow forts and throwing snow balls. Today I can't stand the cold. Back then you couldn't get me inside. I would finally come in and take off my boots and gloves and warm my feet over the heat register. My feet and hands would swell up, turn red and start to itch. Did I have the beginnings of frostbite? Who cares! We had fun! What do you remember? Photo Credit: Pixabay

I have fond memories of my childhood playing outside with my sister. We had so much fun in the Summer catching lightening bugs!

I had some of the same memories as you. I grew up in NY and the snow was our favorite time! =) We would play outside, make snowmen and snow angels. For indoor play we would make up dances, and sing to our favorite music. In the Summer we would play running bases, man hunt, swim in our friends pool around the block, go for walks to the local store and bakery to get a cookie. Or we would walk to the video store to rent a movie! We also loved making mud pies. Some great memories. =)

A lot of the same things as you. We could play for hours without any worries out here in the middle of nowhere.

I remember only wearing flip-flops in the summertime or going barefoot! Hated flip-flops because they would blow out and I'd end up stubbing my toe. My brothers and I would stay outside for hours longer than other kids. My mother had us put bread wrappers on our feet before we put them in our boots. We were warm and toasty. Our sleds were plastic garbage bags. Once you went down the hill a few times you could fly. And dragging a bag up the hill was better than a heavy old sled. We were outside until the rain poured down from the skies. If it wasn't thundering and lightening, we stayed outside to cool off and played in the rain. Was so much fun.

Since we were pretty much in the country, we made a dirt track in my cousin's empty lot after they both got go carts for Christmas. This was our entertainment for a couple of years. We loved to race each other. It was fitting because both of our dads raced on the dirt track circuit for awhile. My uncle stopped first due to health reasons and then my mom made my dad stop after his car caught on fire while racing. I still remember that day.

I remember all of those things and life was so carefree except when we had drills at school to protect us from the bombs the Russians might be sending over to annihilate us. What getting under the stage was going to protect us from I have no idea but that was life in the 50s.

I remember my dog and my neighbor's dog (they lived down a block from us) got sprayed by a skunk. It was no fun giving them a tomato bath to remove the smell. I remember having our home invaded by a bat on summer night. It took 3 tries from 3 neighbors to remove it out of the house. I also remember going to the Jersey Shore when my brother's head was hit by a boogie boarder. He had to got stitches and go to the hospital for it,

I remember basically the same things. The best was skipping rocks into the ocean at my grandmother’s beach house in my underwear.

Those truly were the good old days. I spent the day outside playing too. In summer I lived at the swimming pool. Well, it felt like it anyway. I was outside all day until the streetlights came on and no, I didn't want to go in either. In winter the hill across the street turned into a sledding hill for the neighborhood. I spent many hours gliding down it on our sled. We only had one sled so we each had to take turns. When I got my first and only pair of ice skates, I spent as many hours on the ice skating rink as I did on the now hill. I still love winter, and now I love it more than summer.

I forgot about our sledding hill. It used to turn to ice from all the use. I used to slide down on my saucer sled. One guy I remember tried to ski down that icy slope. Thanks for reminding me.

the first time I was on skates I crashed into a wall. That was also the last time I was on skates. I broke my nose.

I used to do the same thing. Had an ugly old green bike and skates that my step brother bent at one point. What fun memories.

We played outside a lot. It was legal then but now it would be a CPS investigation. We did a lot of things that our parents would be in jail for. We also worked a lot and moved often and lived so far back that we could never be found. We were sometimes homeschooled. Those were the good old days.

My brother and I and other neighborhood kids playing street hockey or stick ball. Riding our bikes or skateboards trying not to get hit, we lived in Philly.
