The qualifications of a moderator at writing sites

I have been a moderator at one site which closed down as the owner was not doing well financially. It was nice being a moderator. What are the qualities you would look for if you had a site and looked for a moderator. I would choose one who was impartial, stayed away from any group on the site, knew their work well. For myLot I have one in mind who has always been frank and forthwith without taking sides. Rudeness is never there in their utterances nor are they sarcastic. Ridiculing anyone is never in their vocabulory. Nor will they use bad words. Knowledgeable and a provider of good advice. . Great moderator in my opinion Not difficult to guess I suppose.

I think one of the best moderators I have ever known was Gil. He knew the Terms and Guidelines backwards and applied them consistently but with humanity, lenience where needed and with a sense of humour. He did not involve himself in member disputes but took a strong and impartial line when asked to help solve them. He made himself available and was always ready to answer questions about the site with politeness and forbearance. He was absolutely dedicated to the well-being of the site in general. There is a lot that goes on in the background that members don't even know about. Things like banning spammers quickly, even before they post anything, checking for plagiarism and dealing with harassment and personal abuse which isn't seen publicly. The remit of the moderator of a writing site will vary considerably, depending on the site. If the site insists on a certain standard of grammar and spelling, then he or she will need to have a good grasp of English (or whatever language the site uses). If the site is less insistent on those things, then he or she should, nevertheless, have a good knowledge of English but would need not to be a 'grammar Nazi'!

@allknowing The roles of moderator and admin are combined at myLot. I'd be interested to know who you think might be suited, though.

I would look for a moderator who is impartial and polite, a person who doesn't allowed bullying or harassment and steps in when it is necessary. I have been a member of a site where the old admin/moderator didn't do his job. A member was bullied in the most extremely way, and instead of locking or deleting the thread the admin/moderator started bullying that member as well. Some of the members who partipated in the bullying wrote things that were way out of line. If it had been my site they would have been banned.

@allknowing Fortunately this site is different. I completely lost my respect for that admin. I reported the discussion, and I thought that the admin would do his job, but I was wrong about that.

Gil (Alex) was a perfect Admin and Moderator here. A moderator must first be a humble person who knows that even a Moderator can make mistakes and be ready to admit it. This is why Alex was perfect, we can discuss with him and he was ready to listen. I would never want to be a Moderator, it's a too hard task.

It is time consuming too. Normally a site has a moderator to assist Admin.

@LadyDuck You could be right but I had no knowledge of Bubblews having so many moderators. Since you say here Admin is also a moderator that is what I thought could change.

@allknowing A site usually has more than one moderator to assist the Admin, you surely remember how many Moderators had Bubblews and how few were good.

I would say all the above plus he/she should have enough time to devote to the site. It would be a responsible job and also a demanding one. So one should have a heart to do that.

Have been a mod on a site that closed, there were several of us, and considering none of us had been a moderator before, it worked out pretty good. I have also been a tester on a site, that had offers, and surveys, I had to try them to see if offers worked, and report back to tech. They wanted to make sure that offers on the page were working, and people would get the incentive. There were perks on both sites for me, they were point based sites, and I earned points for cash outs.
