Had an umbrella but got soaked anyway

There was a possibility of rain yesterday so I took an umbrella with me when I went shopping. And I also wore Crocs flats, as opposed to regular flats, because they are great for rainy weather. When I was waiting for the train I accidentally dropped my umbrella and the stick extended all the way. I picked it up off the ground and tried to push the stick all the way in but it wouldn't go. And without that you can't open the automatic open/close umbrella. I tried many times but it was no use, which made me upset. Later when it actually started to rain, and rain a lot, I ended up getting soaked. And it was very frustrating knowing I had an umbrella with me but couldn't use it. The weird thing was that after I was leaving my last store I tried to push the stick all the way in again and it actually worked. I was able to use the umbrella. However, I didn't need it anymore as the rain had stopped.
