My Ten Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Snubs: Doobie Brothers (#2)

This is it for the “rock” acts, because the final act is a pop superstar. As the Hall of Fame has inducted other pop superstars that gives me the right to say this act belongs, too. Of course, I have the right because it’s just my opinion! Today’s act might cause a little controversy, so here we go. #2: Doobie Brothers What controversy? A lot of people are probably going, “No way! They’re already in!” It’s pretty obvious that they do belong, isn’t it. But they aren’t in. Why? Well, other than the perplexing voting of the people who do the inducting..... If I had to venture a guess as to what’s keeping them out, I think it would be the “two-part” career the Doobie Brothers enjoyed. The “early era,” which featured Tom Johnston as primarily vocalist, seemed to be a little more rocking. The “later era,” with Michael McDoobie, ahem, McDonald, handling the lion’s share of the lead vocals, was more “commercially” oriented. As with the TV arguments (Munsters vs. Addams Family, Bewitched vs. I Dream of Jeannie), most people have a definite preference of which era they prefer. (Early era for me, thank you.) And, of course, critics being critics, the Hall of Fame — which would make you think, based on the word fame, that they exist to reward success — seems to have a negative attitude toward “sell-outs.” So “they” (the critics/voters) don’t like the McDonald era? I don’t like it nearly as much, but it’s about fame, not personal preferences. (They seem to forget that when they put people like Tom Waits in. ) The Doobie Brothers, per Wikipedia, have sold over 40 million albums. That’s over three times what two inducted acts combined have sold. What more do they want? A letter from Epstein’s mother???? A great Doobies song:
Great song from the Stampede album, before they went in a totally different direction. I do not own the rights to this.

This is an insane omission. Sure, I only like the Simmons/Johnston Doobies not McDonald but looking subjectively at their entire career, what a career! Tons of hits. Tons of sales. Great songs that still endure. "Listen to the Music" alone should have gotten them in.

I agree completely. It is the contrast of an act like the Doobies not being in (or it taking them forever to nominate Linda or the Moodies) while putting in rap acts (which I would understand IF rap had influenced rock, but it came along 30 years AFTER the fact) that makes the induction committee/process look positively STOOPID.

@FourWalls - Although, Phil Collins said that he based that evil laugh he did on "Mama" on Melle Mel's laugh in the hip hop classic, "The Message."

I am one of those people astounded to learn The Doobie Brothers aren't already in the Hall of Fame. Maybe the name should be changed to The Hall of Who We're Voting for to Make Us Look Like We're Smarter than Everyone Else when it comes to Rock and Roll Talent but that probably wouldn't fit in the plaque.

As much as I liked the Doobies early music I think the loss of Tom Johnson to illness and the reinvention of the band with Michael Mc Donald killed their opportunity to have enough impact to make the Hall. Although with the HOF's confusing criteria you never know? Anyway, I always enjoy "Listening to the Music" by these rockers..

I didn't know they were not in there, I guess I just assumed they were. I'm still not sure why they call it the "Rock n Roll" hall of fame, maybe they should just change it to the "music" hall of fame.

A bit of Doobie Brothers trivia, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who played guitar with the band (1974–1979, 1987, 1992) and also played on the early Steely Dan hits, went on to advise the Defense Department on missile technology and terrorism. He also served as an advisor to NASA and almost ran as a congressman from California. He decided not to. He acquired all of his technical knowledge by independent study after leaving the band.

Dear Mister Kotter: Please excuse The Doobie Brothers for not being in the Hall of Fame. It's not Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons' fault that Michael McDonald ate all of the available microphones as he sang. Signed Epstein's Mother

Every time a friend on Facebook mentions McDonald I have to post one of my favorite SCTV bits:
Rick Moranis does a great comedy impression of the blue eyed soul singer of Yacht Rock fame. Don't ever lose the smooth.
