DNA Testing

I recently got my DNA testing back from Ancestry. For you that have not done it, you get a little about your heritage and a lot of matches of people that are your family. I do mean a lot of family. The main reason I did it was to find a first cousin that my family has not heard of since he was a baby (long story about that). But, I didn't find him or his children yet. I say yet because he could get tested at any time. So I am working continuing to work on my genealogy. Have you had your DNA tested for genealogy? If you have what were you looking for? If you are not going to test because you are against it, why are you against it?

I have not done this myself but I might be interested to do so. Some of my family members keep family trees on Ancestry.com and things like that. I don't know much about individuals but we do have a lot of names on the tree. Well, more on my mum's side but I have 16 cousins on my mum's side and only 3 on my dad's so that's quite a big difference to start with! I'd love to learn a little more about my own heritage and to find out if there is anything interesting in my family history. My partner's family history is quite interesting. He can trace his family tree back to William the Conqueror and King Rollo of Denmark. There was a squire of Ashton-under-Lyme, and stories about rags to riches and family abandonment. I hope that you are able to find your cousin in time.

I had mine done because my nephew asked me to (he paid). We used 23andMe. The heritage report was interesting. It showed that I'm almost entirely European (which is what I would have expected) and that my father's genes originated (a long way back) in the Middle East but my mother's line originated (again, a long way back) in Northern Europe or Russia. We are, of course, as English as it's possible to be - we can trace both sides back to at least the early 1700's. I have had many 'matches' (mostly 3rd and 4th and greater cousins) but only about two of them have I been able to link to our family tree (which, as I say, goes back quite a way). I am occasionally slightly worried that this DNA database thing might lead to insurance companies increasing what they charge if they knew of the likelihood of a congenital condition or of the possibility that certain information might be legally required to be shared in a criminal investigation (not that I have any concerns, personally, on either of those counts!).

I was 50% Irish/Scottish and 50% Northwestern European (England). I did upload my DNA file to gedmatch.com which is one that you can upload to from Ancestry and 23 and me. It is a little more interesting. If you upload your DNA there, they have a youtube video that will help you understand it. Yes, you may be right and I would be one that the insurance companies would like to get a hold of my DNA!!! LOL.

I would never send my DNA to one of those companies. Nope. No way. No how.
