I saw this image on Pixabay and thought to myself, "What a sassy cow". Now, that's my kind of cow. I love that she is sticking her tongue out in an "I don't care" kind of attitude. Years ago I had a cow, well a few cows living in the field behind my house. There was one that came to the fence every time I would go outside to hand clothes on the clothes line. After a while I would talk to her and she would softly moo back. We used to carry on some pretty good conversations. I would then go to the fence and she would let me rub her head. One day I was out and noticed she was no longer there at the fence. I saw my neighbor and asked about her and was told she had been buttered for meat. They offered us some of it but I just couldn't take it. I had started thinking of her as more than just a animal meant for meat, I started thinking of her as more of a pet. It was a while before I could eat beef again. Have you ever felt like this about an animal that has been brought up to end up on a dinner table?

I feel this way, when Jay hangs a deer carcass in his garage! My sister raised two pigs, from the time they were babies. They became pets! Yet, the purpose for buying them in the first place, was so their family would have pork for the freezer. My sister cried her heart out over this:(

@kobesbuddy My husband is not as squeamish as I- he butchered the turkeys that we raised. I'll never forget the tom turkey snagging a grocery receipt out of my pocket.

@kobesbuddy I have a hard time with not making animals of all kinds my pet. I would never be a farmer or rancher.

@sallypup It's sad when near the end, they're fighting for their life!

That's why so many people have become vegans and vegetarians. It is heartbreaking, because cows are very intelligent. I do think about it as I eat my meat.

Neither do I. Any meat I eat I block how it got there from my mind.

I can see how it would turn you off from eating beef for while, Susan.

It still does for periods of time when I think about it.

I had a terrible supper when I was a teenager. I'd taught a soft coated Jersey steer to walk with me on a halter and then one night, there was a roast on the table. Dad told me that it was indeed Teddy Roosevelt. I didn't eat meat that night.

I'll bet you didn't. I wouldn't have been able to either.

I've never been that close to those animals that end up on my dinner table. I can see how it would affect your eating beef for a long time.

She was a pet for sure. I would talk to her and rub her nose. I couldn't eat her after making her a friend.

If I had to have a hand in killing an animal up close and personal, I would never touch meat again.

i love cows :) they've such personalities. sadly i've butchered quite a few 's i used to raise my own. sold many, too, fer the same purpose. i can't eat beef now 'n 've great guilt o'er the past fer such. i did keep a couple who finally perished from ol' age. they were like 2 big pups. one i believe thought 'twas a horse? i could put a saddle'n that steer, he'd beg fer a turn'n the round pen 'n loved to ride 'top the flatbed trailer once the hay'd been 'nloaded. he 'twas quite the character 'n i refused to eat 'r sell him.

I can understand the feeling of guilt. But you do what you have to do to live and survive. I think that the ones you made friends with ended up dying of old age.

That's very sad. We had pet lambs and calves when I was growing up but we never ate any pets.

A family across the street from us had chickens and the kids would have to help with the butchering and plucking. My best friend was a vergetarian because of that.

I could never eat an animal I was on a first-name basis with.

Me neither. It becomes personal when they have a name.

I am getting less and less eager to eat that steak.
