! Particularly when a wee'un like this'd be found. Shows that our lil ecosystem aint doin' too bad 'fterall. The "good critters" 're reproducin' 'n their young're thrivin'.
They'd be purty peaceful lil critters, 's ya can see from the pic. 'twixt the hubs hand shakin' 'n mine, 'twas not possible fer me to get a clearer pic. 'tis a youngster 'n ya can see how wee such'd be.
't maturity, they'd be 'bout 5" long. These lil jewels 're really needed to keep insects'n line. Eatin' red harvest ants, grasshoppers, crickets, various worms 'n such.
'lways a treat to see 'em! A good reminder to the hubs to not go 'bout puttin' poisons out. Ya kill their food sources 'n they'll perish, too.
're ya mindful to how ya tend to what'cha consider "pests"? What the consequences'd be fer those helpful critters 'round yer place? I confess to bein' most tempted when all natural deterrents fer grasshoppers proved futile here to go full warfare with 'em. Thankfully I 'twas able to talk the hubs 'nto jest lettin' 't ride'n let nature do 'ts thing. More birds 've shown fer the feast, these horned toads, "normal" frogs, feral cats 'n fox 're doin' all they can to get't under control.
They seem to be makin' a purty good dent'n the grasshopper population. My purple green beans that nearly all got mowed down to ground level 're sproutin' new leaves. With a bit 'f luck, they might e'en produce me some beans 'fore frost comes.12 people like this

@crazyhorseladycx I used to just love listening to the bullfrogs out in the pond at night, we would sleep with our bedroom window open at this time of the year and their calls would be my bedtime lullaby.

@Nevena83 they'll usually shoot blood from their eyes's a warnin'. think 't'd take a lot 'n 'em feelin' very threatened to bite.

'tis not oft they're seen 's they've quite the camouflage. sometimes coverin' 'emselves with sandy soil, jest their lil heads stickin' out whilst they wait fer a meal to stop by.

@thelme55 the hubs's like a young'un, thinks he's gotta pick'p 'n bring me all sorts 'f lil critters. personally, i ne'er interfere with 'em 'nless they'd be'n trouble 'n i can help 'em.
really though, these're jest bumpy feelin', no sharp pricks 't this age. the elders 're a tad spiky, but still not 'nough to pierce yer skin.

really? used to be a large population 'f 'em out here 'fore folks started movin' this way. too much poisons bein' sprayed 's really made 'em decline. i'm jest thrilled this makes the 3rd we've seen, this'un bein' the youngest. the eggs hatch 'bout this time 'f year, so i've great hopes they've 'nough time to get a lil size'n 'em to survive the winter. i need a whole army 'f these to help battle the grasshoppers, lol. thanks :) wish we could'a both been a bit more steady.

Is he dangerous?
