1791 - John Fitch is granted a United States patent for the steamboat.
1920 - Women are given the right to vote with the passage of the 19th Amendment.
1970 - Melissa McCarthy was born. She is an American actress, comedian, producer, screenwriter and fashion designer. She was Sookie St. James in the TV series Gilmore Girls (2000-2007). She played Molly Flynn in Mike & Molly (2010-2016) for which she won a Primetime Emmy. She also won a Primetime Emmy for hosting Saturday Night Live. Some of her movies include Bridesmaids, The Heat, Tammy, The Boss and Can You Ever Forgive Me?
1980 - Macaulay Culkin was born. He is an American actor, musician and author. He has starred in Home Alone (see below), Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, My Girl, The Good Son, Richie Rich and Party Monster. He was the vocalist for the band, The Pizza Underground.
