Coffee that is not coffee. Do it yourself!

Hello everyone, as a result of the shortage of some items in my country, people have chosen to make their own products and with this, they have decided and invented to make their own coffee, without coffee, as they read it. The first thing is to get precooked cornmeal, if they do not have it or sell it then get corn in grains, then the grains are put to toast until they pass from a transparent white to a bone white, that happens in a matter of 10 minutes on fire low in a pan without sugar without oil without water without anything, just to toast the corn, then process in an electric mill or where the coffee or a manual mill is milled, until it is equal to a refined cornmeal. Then the flour that we have obtained with nothing to toast again is put back in the saucepan, it is placed on a very low heat and waiting with a spoon stirring again and again until it looks like coffee, like an intense brown color almost black There we have our coffee, now if we can use it in the way we usually prepare the coffee and the most interesting thing is that it tastes exactly the same as coffee, try it and tell me if I was right or not, they would be impressed with the resemblance to traditional coffee, and the best part is that it is the best thing for people who take antidepressants, hypertensive patients, diabetics and those whose caffeine regime should be reduced to zero. And to drink coffee!

I have never tried to make my own coffee, but I know that some Danes did it during the Second World War. It was also possible to buy a coffee substitute that cointained chicory.

@YuleimaVzla It is a type of plant, I think it usually has blue flowers, but I have only seen them on photos. I had the chance to try the coffee substitute that contains chicory. We can't buy it in the stores anymore, but I once received a cup of chicory coffee in a historical museum in my country. I hope that you will also get the chance to try it one day.

@Porcospino Oh if it sounds interesting and how is its taste? Is it sweeter or bitter than coffee? Does it taste like coffee or does it taste more like herbal tea?

You know? I have heard a lot about chicory and I have no idea what it is, I do not know if it is a drink, or a tuber or some wild branch I really do not know, but it sounds so familiar to me in foreign movies that a huge awakening has awakened me Curious to try it, I hope one day in life I wish I could experience that taste.

I think you have a good attitude of making do with what you have especially in a crisis situation. Filipinos make a similar thing, similar procedure but the only difference is we use rice, takes out the need to mill or ground so less the energy, I'm assuming corn is much cheaper there than rice.

@YuleimaVzla so you believe in reincarnation? OK so perhaps you were. Filipinos in a way are different from our neighboring Asian countries , some have looks and have a culture that is similar to yours or those countries that were former Spanish colonies. Some jokingly refer to Filipinos as Asian Latinos or Asian Hispanics lol!. I'm glad that there is still normalcy in difficult times like these, our country has also gone through many economic crisis but I don't think it would compare in magnitude to yours, God bless your family and your country and I hope this would be over soon..

@louievill Yes, the idea of a dictatorship disguised as democracy is something that has led to the collapse of a solid country, but anyway, you know? I have noticed here that there are many Filipinos who look like Mexicans hahaha and yesterday I noticed that they can easily impersonate Latinos and vice versa, it is wonderful the mix of cultures that I love.

I consume a lot of rice I think that in the past I was also Asian hahaha, but I love the use of rice in my kitchen because of how versatile it is, I do this grinding and roasting procedure to make a baby food with milk and it feeds it very well, that is widely used in the country, and I like it with crisis or not, trying new and healthy things is like cooking and chemistry.

You are welcome, and I will share other news that perhaps for some are novelties, but they have been practices of our ancestors that have been forgotten by technology, and it is good to know, somehow if one day we have to live with only the rustic and precarious In a place with few things we could solve anything we do not have at hand at the moment.

Yes, but we are very positive in everything, so we are very effusive Latinos, maybe I recognize it too much that in other countries we seem a bit exaggerated hahaha but this has made us survive in the midst of crises and it is good to share it because today we are and Maybe tomorrow at some point someone in crisis can serve these tips.

It sounds like it would work and I"m curious to know how it tastes also. If you try it, you have to let us know how it turns out and how it tastes. We have a coffee blend here with chickory added to it. If I remember correctly it is a strong flavor, not really bitter but strong and a little bite to it.

Interesting. Here in the US we have a weed called a dandelion. Its root can be dug up and ground for a fake coffee like drink.
