There's an old saying: "Saying 'I have car trouble' is redundant. If you have a car, you have trouble." The same is true of home ownership. Thankfully, I've not had much of either. If you own a house for 30 years, especially an older house (my house was built in 1950), there will be issues. And, today, one of those "issues" popped up. I noticed the cables on my garage door were broken. I called the company that installed the door (some 27 years ago, thank you), but they couldn't get me until next Tuesday. I had visions of the door crashing onto my car and my homeowner's and auto insurance companies fighting over who was going to pay (and I have them both with the same company! ), so I tried another company. About 90 minutes after I called everything was done. Yes, it wasn't cheap (a little less than $600), but that's the first time I've had anything done to the garage door since having the opener fixed ten years ago. Repairs are a fact of life in home ownership. Thankfully, my necessities have been few and far between...and none of them bank-breakers!

Do you remember the movie the Money Pit? Boats are holes in the water you throw money into. Houses are huge vacuums that suck the cash right out of your pocket. Don't get me started on children...

That's great that you've had so little trouble. After Vince looking after admin in schools for so many years, he is always thinking about maintenance issues.

Don`t have to tell me about it, I have 3 houses that are getting close to needing new roofs. One house needs new floor joists and new floor everything, another needs a kitchen floor, again. I know repairs! You are lucky, that lasted just passed the warranty., right?

No, it was so old the warranty was long gone. No biggie, I think it was a good price (less than $600 to replace the entire workings of the door).

Thankfully, I have never owned a home! It would surely fall into a state of disrepair immediately!

I understand old homes and repairs completely. When I bought my home also built in the 50's the realtor said the home has great character. I never figured out what that means, but maybe it really meant appearances can be deceiving. Anyway, when things are old eventually things can go wrong. Like the movie "The Money Pit." Fortunately, it has not been as bad as that
