The generator saga is finally finished....I hope

A few weeks ago when we learned that Hurricane Dorian was headed our way (eastern coast of the US), my husband got out our generator to be sure it was working in case we lost power during the storm.
That dumb thing (the generator, not my husband) blew out/fried several things including two electric garage door openers, a living room ceiling fan, two electric clocks, a sound machine, and two computer speakers.
My husband spent hours and hours trying to figure out what and why it happened. A friend who is an electrician helped some. They tried everything they could think of.
The generator wasn't defective because we tried another one that belongs to a neighbor and the same thing happened (except we unplugged everything this time.)
My husband decided that it must be the wiring underground, so he dug a long trench from the garage to the house, laid down new wiring, and covered it back up using his tractor.
Well, of course it still didn't work. Finally, finally they figured it out and it was a simple wire that could have been fixed quickly, cheaply, and saved us a ton of money, time, and hard work.
We had one last casualty, though. This last time, he forgot to unplug my washer and that got fried. So it's to Lowe's Home Improvement tomorrow after church. Sure didn't want to buy a new one, but it is what it is.
At least, thank the good Lord, we should have a working generator if and when we get another hurricane. There's always much to be thankful for.

don't envy ya replacin' that washer. these new washers're way too high tech fer this ol' gal. when mine croaks 'n 'tis no longer fixable, i might jest've to go back to a wash board'n tub!

@1creekgirl It is a pain when you cannot find the reason of a problem.

Hopefully the generator will work well if and when we need it. My washer was only eight years old and worked fine. Sure hate to have to buy a new one.

He started with the most simple, then it just progressed. The solution turned out to be easy, but it was so unusual that even his electrician friend didn't figure it out at first.

Oh, no! I am so sorry so many things were fried! I'm glad you finally found the culprit. You're lucky to have a friend who is an electrician.
