You know, it seems that there are “spells” we go through every year where a “glut” of celebrities leave us. The news just broke that we’ve lost a second rock great this weekend, on the heels of the death of Eddie Money.
Ric Ocasek, lead singer for Boston’s post-punk greats The Cars, was found dead today (9/15) in his home in Manhattan.
The Cars mixed rock and synthesizers into a fresh sound, coming out of the punk vs. disco era in the late 70s. They made numerous trips to the top of the charts, including the classic “Drive,” sung by Ben Orr (who passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2000).
Their other hits included “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Let’s Go,” “Just What I Needed,” and “You Might Think.”
The Cars were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018....long overdue.
Ric Ocasek was 75.
One of my favorite Cars songs:

I have never listened to The Cars but always sad when a talent passes. I was just commenting on another post about him saying that it's kind of scary because they say news comes in threes and there have been two that we know of.

Always enjoyed The Cars. Weird to think of these musical fellas as oldsters.

It is very sad. I read about him dying last night on Twitter. I listened to The Cars a lot back in the day.

This one took me aback. Out of left field. I didn't realize he was 75. That means he wasn't all that young when the Cars hit.

It is a shame that Ric Ocasek of the Cars has left us at age 75. He will be sorely missed beyond words.

I heard about this; and it's sad that two of the musicians from my era are gone.
