While my wife was away there was a smell in the house I could not identify. Well not initially I hunted high and low for this smell it was pungent in fact it was totally repugnant. One morning I woke up and as soon as I came out of the bathroom I could smell it. It was getting stronger so I thought today I am going to hunt down that smell until I find it. It was coming from the kitchen initially I thought it might be coming from under the sink i cleared out the cupboard and found nothing it did not smell remotely of it. I was puzzled. I thought perhaps something had crawled behind something and either died or rotted. It was very unpleasant. I stood in the middle of the kitchen scratching my head and thinking where next. All of a sudden I noticed the freezer light was not working. I looked at the socket and yes the plug was hanging out of the socket. I Plugged it back in and opened the freezer. OH my word above it smelt like someone had died. Everything had melted I decided to keep the freezer turned on to refreeze it all and then empty it and take it up to the tip. I had just missed the rubbish collection which we only have every other week. One week household rubbish the next week only recycling collection. I thought I would empty it the day before collection. Although refreezing it got rid of the smell what I had not anticipated was that it would all freeze into one solid block. I had to break it all up. I managed to fill two sacks of stuff for he bin men to take but the rest was so frozen I had to wait for it to defrost. Well yesterday was the day. I managed to clear the whole lot out. There was six sacks of foul smelling rotten food. I bagged it all up and had to drive it to another town because our rubbish collection site had burnt down and is being repaired. I lined the boot of my car with plastic bin liners and have dumped it all. My daughter told me to claim it on our insurance to replace all the food. I told her no as the excess we have to pay would probably replace it all.... So that has been my morning today getting rid of dead body smells! Have you ever had to do this?

Oh my goodness, I can imagine the horrible smell. The day the lightning damaged the refrigerator our insurance paid for what was inside and for a new refrigerator. They would have not paid for a faulty plug.

@garymarsh6 In that case I am sure the insurance would have not paid. The other really bad smell happens when you get some rotten potatoes. It is a disgusting smell, hard to get rid of it.

The plug was not faulty it had been pulled out slightly from the socket so not sending any power to the freezer. MY daughters phone charger was in the next socket but rather than say she did it I said it must have been me!

My mother would have put all that on her compost pile then covered it with a lot of soil @garymarsh6 I think I'd probably try to do that as well but I'm not sure if either mom or I could tolerate the smell you described.

I certainly hope it does not too. All that wasted food a terrible waste not to mention the expense of having to replace it.

My gosh Gary!! That is awful! And now do you need to repair or make more secure that plug? Luckily I only have mild cooking smells now and again nothing else here. But when I do I use Lysol Nuetra Air Odor Eraser..just a few sprays and its all gone along with opening the kitchen doors and windows.

I have a disinfectant spray and have put cat litter in a box inside the freezer to absorb the smell and a bowl of lemon juice and baking soda to absorb the smell too. Actually the smell is not too bad after 24 hours of that!

Yes but it was after a hurricane that knocked out the electric for many days. Yucky job. But we get garbage pickup every week.

We get our collections every week but they alternate between recycling and normal household garbage although each week they also collect food waste but not on that scale sadly!

oh my! any ideas 's to why such t'was not plugged'n? what a mess, one i truly don't envy ya. 't least we've a truck if'n such happened here. cannot 'magine the stench'n yer poor car from that, no matter how well line that boot'd be. years 'go, the hubs worked't a meat packin' place 'bout 40 miles from here. he'd gone'n with some 'f his co-workers'n they'd ordered lots 'f freshly frozen seafood from the gulf coast. he thought nothin' leavin' such'n the truck, out'n the sun, durin' the summer. ya know, coz such'd dry ice? he said he could smell'n awful odor when he got near his truck, but didn't think much 'bout 't 'til he opened the door. yep, no more dry ice, jest the stench 'f rotted shrimp, crab 'n oysters! which the liquid 'f such leaked out'ta said container'n lay'n pools 'hind the seat. he'd no option but to drive such foul smellin' truck home. the stench 'bsorbed through e'ery bit 'f upholstery. took some months to get rid 'f 't entirely.

@garymarsh6 This happened to me. The freezer concerned was in my church and the pong was first noticed just as kids from the local primary school were arriving for a carol service with their parents. I opened the freezer and the whole church flooded with the foul odour. I started retching and two classroom assistants took charge of the kitchen and sorted it all out. Never in the history of bad smells had I ever experienced anything so awful.

Oh, so sorry! I can imagine the stink. We lost power for 5 days many years ago and lost all the food in our freezers and refrigerator. Fortunately, we didn’t have much and we were able to toss it out before it stunk.

That must have been horrible. I'm glad you found the source and it's gone to the collection site. No, I've never had to deal with that.

Oh my! That was a waste but then, it happened to me, too when I was in the Philippines. There is mostly a blackout in the middle of the night that some of the food got stinky and rotten.

Yes sadly but it would be pointless claiming on the insurance because the excess for any claim would pay for it anyway so we will not bother. We will just restock it instead! Such a shame!

Burn some fragrant things in the house like incense sticks or aromatic candles

My wife has burnt some already so the smell is certainly not quite as bad as it was. I have filled the two bowls one of cat litter and the other with sodium bicarb and I am hoping that will absorb any remaining smells.
