I told them that they had to eat

I walked into my brother in law's house to find that the dogs had not eaten much, if any, of the food I gave them last night. I replenished their water but did not get them fresh food this time. I let them out to do their business and gave them each a treat just so I know that they are eating. I told them that their family would be home in a few days but that I would be coming twice a day to let them out and feed them. I told them that they had to eat. One of the dogs was drinking water as I said this and began to eat a few pieces of kibble. The other two are more shy and I hope will eat after I've left. I will go back this evening to check on them, let them out and make sure that they are eating.

@ScribbledAdNauseum May be they have the habit to be alone many hours, but they notice when the owners are away.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I hope they ended up eating. They are missing your sister and brother in law.

@infatuatedbby I think so too. Which is why i told them that they would be back in a few days but that I'd be by twice every day. Some might think I'm crazy but dogs can understand on atleast a 2nd grade level.

I hope so. I'm going to go back at about 6 o'clock and see if they'e eaten. I'm really hoping they do. They have drank a little, I can tell that. If they STILL haven't eaten tonight then I am thinking of bringing them some wet food to see if they'll eat that.

One of the doggies is about... Actually, I'm not sure how old he is. He's an old gentleman, and while he can get up and downstairs okay, I think his playtime is over. However, he's also the one that did eat some. I didn't look for any toys but the other two dogs are more skittish. I'm going to go over in about an hour or so and see if they've eaten anything.

@CookieMonster46 Did her dog pass away from a undetected illness, old age, or was it heart break? After my mom passed away, her dog went to live with my sister's co-worker. He had a big field to play in but passed away only a month or so after going there. My sister didn't tell us for years! I went to feed the dogs. They hadn't eaten much, however, one of the dogs ate while I was there. She stood there and ate in front of me and quite a bit of food to. I told her good girl. She's not as skittish as the other one. The other one would not eat in front of me, I tried to pet her and she growled. However, and I find this both cute and funny... She backed up and then looked up at the treats. I gave her one because I wanted to make sure she had eaten and because I wanted her to get used to me. She took it out of my hand. The older dog ate this morning so I know he has eaten. They all went outside and I let them stay out until they wanted in.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I was just thinking about my last dog, when I was at work, she wouldn't eat she was sad until I came home. My current dog will eat no matter what, but will be looking for me, until I get here if I go somewhere. When my neighbor went on vacation she had me watch her dog, I had to lure him out and then play ball and he came alive. He wouldn't eat and just laid there sad. He was a big dog, can't remember what type. But the next time the neighbor went away she didn't want to bother me again and ask me to watch Sargon, so she put him in a kennel I think at the vet. They called her on her vacation to say he passed away was heart broken.

Dogs have to be fed regularly otherwise you can be accused of dog abuse.

I don't disagree. These aren't my dogs, but my sister's. She has paid me to feed them twice a day and let them out. They just aren't eating. I fed them a treat so that I knew that they had eaten since they did not eat yesterday at all.

They will eat when they get hungry

I am sure that they will, but I just hope they don't get sick before that. A friend's dog goes on hunger strike every once in awhile but i can put him in his cage with the food and he'll either eat it or stay in the cage all day.

They probably miss their mom and dad. They will eat if they get hungry enough. You can try adding some water cooking it in the microwave for 15 seconds. Take it out stir it every few minutes until it's fluffy and cool. Dogs like wet food better usually.

I was thinking of going and getting them some wet food but I might try that as well. I don't know. I just want them to eat as it will be a long few days if they do not. The sis's family isn't coming back until Wednesday.

Animals are funny and don't seem to eat much when their parents are gone.

My bestie's dogs and cats will eat for me. Of course they are used to me being around more. I only petsit once a year for my sister's doggies.

I love animals. My sister knows that I will always petsit, or she should know.
