Love Does Not Require Understanding

Today, while at Wally World, I had to use the restroom. I parked my basket and went in the restroom in the back, next to the layaway area. As soon as I walked in I saw a man's head sticking above the stall dividers while doing some maintenance work. "Come on in," a man's voice said. "You're in the right restroom." I hesitated. "It's all right. I'm a transsexual." After I did my business, she and I spent about 20 minutes talking. She told me about the pain she'd endured from people -- including family members -- because she had to become a female, although born a male. I'll confess that I don't understand the emotional, physical, psychological, and/or whatever else you want to call it things that go on inside a person that makes them need -- not "want" -- to be the other gender. But you know something? There are two great commandments in the Bible: love the LORD your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength; and love your neighbor as yourself. Love doesn't require "understanding" what is going on in the person's life to show love. I left after about 20 minutes, giving her a hug (because anyone who's suffered the abuse she has by jerks who think themselves superior to her can use a hug). No, I didn't feel uncomfortable. No, I didn't "understand" what went on in her life as a male that made her realize that she wasn't "meant to be" a man. (I do understand that nobody's going to pay what a Lexus costs to have the surgeries, endure the harassment from people, and take the hormones for life just "for kicks." She said she hasn't been able to afford the cost of having her voice altered to sound more feminine yet.) I do know that everyone needs love. I hope she felt love today.

Good for you! You are so amazing! They HAVE to find their own identity. I've had a few students who have been transgender and they have been wonderful happy people

I still don't understand why people can't just let people be. It's not a "choice" (not a single one of my gay friends "chose" to be gay, for instance,) but treating fellow human beings as fellow human beings is. You did well!
