It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

I couldn't resist taking this picture of the wild and thorny hedgerow just beyond my garden. The meadow beyond it was frosty and the sun was shining onto the hedge which is now showing signs of red berries.
It just reminded me of walks I used to have with my dad on Christmas Day. We'd leave Mum at home to get herself ready for our usual Christmas tea with mince pies, Christmas cake and a sherry trifle. My granny always stayed with us over Christmas so she helped Mum out so please don't think we abandoned her to the 'woman's work'!!
I loved the bracing walk in the icy countryside and seeing the hedgerows full of berries and the sun glistening on the frosty grass banks. Sadly our hedgerows are disappearing so it's nice to know that nobody is going to interfere with this lovely little bit of wilderness while I'm here.

@olliesmum So true. There were blackberries in the bush where I was standing to take photos on the weekend. They're vicious things.

@JudyEv I can remember when we used to go out blackberrying when I was little. We always wore our tattiest clothes in case we got caught up in the brambles.

Thankfully this piece of land is an SSSI (a site of special scientific interest) as it has some rare grasses and plants so it can only be grazed and not built on so we're quite lucky there. But you're right, we're just destroying everything good in the world it seems.

It's really a shame that there are so many greedy people who can't see beyond making money @olliesmum

Those are beautiful memories, you can always cherish:) I remember taking walks after dinner, on Christmas Day. The weather here was usually starting to get cold and most of the time, we had a dusting of fresh snow on the ground. We don't do this any longer, but I have fond memories, also. Are those hedgerow berries edible?

@olliesmum That might be the bush my grandma had growing beside her front porch. The birds loved those red berries, but us children were told not to eat them.

No they're not. It's a hawthorn hedge and everything about it is poisonous although the birds eat the berries and seem to get away with it!
