All of us wish that it was a straight, problem-free path to our goals...but we all know that rarely happens! There are going to be pitfalls and rough patches along the way; but we can't let that deter us from what we want to accomplish. Being a woman was one of the rough patches I had to overcome in my career; but I managed to make a very good living as a business owner, manager and supervisor. What pitfalls have you had along the way? Photo Credit: Image from an email from a friend

It's kind of sad that we realize important things in life as we age. As they say, I wish I knew then what I know now.

I began my mortgage in 2010. In 2012 I went to see a mortgage consultant and she showed me how much I had paid back. As it was a 25 year mortgage it didn't look like very much. I asked if I could reduce the years of my mortgage. She said I could pay it back over 10 years so I accepted. I went in for a five year fixed rate. In 2013 I began over paying it. I saw my mortgage was going down a bit faster so I was encouraged. I thought I would have a go at completely off in 2017. So I made a plan to do just that. I needed to have my balance at 25,000 in the start of 2016 and at the start of 2017 have it at 10,000. I opened a regular saving account and when my balance got to 3500 I paid off my mortgage.

@LindaOHio My plan to pay off my mortgage had to last for four years. Saving accounts were better in those days than they are now. My main bank still have it's 5% interest regular saving account. The building society my mortgage was at has got rid of its 5% regular saver. The other bank has put its interest down to 3% for its current account and 2% for its regular saver.

Sometimes experience through making those mistakes in life can be the best teacher in overcoming the pitfalls.

It is very true, nothing is easy and if it is easy, it is strange, everything has its ups and downs but the one who perseveres wins.
