Many places with natural attractions have areas that are, for want of a better term, touristy. That's pretty much what Gatlinburg, Tennessee has become: wall-to-wall hotels, restaurants, mini-golf courses, museums, and other attractions. Nevertheless, I love to walk around Gatlinburg. It's relatively flat, given that it's just inches from the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains. My favorite place to walk is along River Road, where the Little Pigeon River provides scenery. Gatlinburg wasn't all that crowded on Thursday when I was there; however, it's getting very close to time for the "invasion." Fall foliage viewing time is upon us, and Gatlinburg (and Pigeon Forge, along with Cherokee and Asheville on the North Carolina side of the Smokies) will soon be jacking up those hotel prices to welcome the visitors to town. (No fooling: there was a room available in Gatlinburg for $94 on Thursday night [I didn't take it because I was a little too tired to drive the extra miles to the hotel]. The next day, it was $236. ) One of my favorite things to do in Gatlinburg is have fried green tomatoes at Calhoun's, a regional restaurant with a legendary reputation....for ribs. Yeah, that's right. They have the best ribs in Tennessee, and I eat the appetizer. Go figure. Anyway, as I get free parking for eating at the restaurant (parking is at a major premium in Gatlinburg), I decided I would take a little stroll along River Road. The river, as might be expected in a dry spell, is pretty low. Still, the plants and trees are beginning to show signs that they are surrendering their green to autumn. It's not too colorful right now, but I still saw plenty of foliage to consider this my first "fall foliage trip" of 2019.

I’m allergic to pork; otherwise, I probably would’ve as well.

@1creekgirl — it’s not as bad as living in Florida and being allergic to seafood! Oh, wait, I have that, too.....

Sounds like a great trip. We haven't been to Gatlinburg in years, enjoyed it when we did, though.

I only drove through Gatlinburg and was happy not to search for parking.

I usually take the bypass so I don’t have to drive through Gatlinburg.

I have had green tomatoes, but I don't remember ever having the fried version. I did enjoy the movie. They showed it on the plane when our unit went to Panama. Kathy Bates is great in everything!

The fall is the busiest time there. I hope the colors are not a let down this year.

Considering how pretty it was with barely a change, I think it will be beautiful this fall.

@FourWalls It will as long as the heat doesn't mess the colors up. Maybe not.

The river is having a dry spell and it might change when the rains come along. It is superb that the plants are beginning to show signs they are going to soon turn from summery green to autumn crunchy leaf color. The accommodation was affordable on Thursday night though Saturday night was a rip off price. Well done for getting free parking by having a meal. I imagine it is expensive to park a car in that area.

i would gladly "hike" relatively flat places. here's it's getting more commercialized, too. it's partly nice, the goods and services you need are just streets away, but it's getting noisy, crowded and dirty. we have those plants here, too. i love colorful leaves.

I've been to Asheville a few times as my former in-laws live there. It is a pretty area but I could never live so far inland. I need the ocean.
