Fans of Stephen King will probably appreciate this bit of generosity on his part. Aspiring filmmakers and film students can adapt a Stephen King short story for only $1.00.
Stephen King began doing this as a way to give back to the film industry for the joy it gave him upon his beginning successes.
There is even a book that talks more about what "Dollar Babies" are. Sean S. Lealos wrote the book that was released in 2015. The book talks about 19 of these "Dollar Babies" and their successes and struggles.

I have seen so many of his movies and read some of his books as well. That's so nice of him to do.

Same, though I've seen more of his movies than I have read of his books. I thought it was awesome of him.

@ScribbledAdNauseum yeah I have seen way more of his movies. His books are good also but sometimes it very hard to get into them as they start off slow.

I've watched his movies but read maybe one of his books. I've been told by others that his newer books are not very good. I know he has a new one out recently that looked intriguing.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I have read "Elevation" (released in 2018) and I loved it. I also loved Finders Keepers and End of Watch I think released in 2016. I have not yet read "The Institute", but I asked the book as a gift, so I will have to wait until Christmas.

@LadyDuck The Institute is the newest book, isn't it? I follow a few facebook groups for reading and people have discussed it there.

Basically Stephen King sells the rights to some of his short stories for only $1.00. The independent film makers can then focus on the cost of producing the movie instead of the cost of royalties to the author.

I didn't know about this--but it makes good business sense--and he is a great businessman when it comes to getting his work out there in new and innovative ways

I think he's been doing it pretty much from the beginning, so around the mid to late 70's.

@divalounger It's awesome that he does this though. I am sure it gives his stories more exposure so ti's a win / win.

@rebelann Nah. Indie film makers aren't rich. These are the kid that are just trying to make a name for themselves, fresh out of college type.

That sounds like a really interesting idea. I think it is the book Night Shift that contains a lot of shorts by him. I wonder if that pertains to screenplays too? Most films include a screenplay writer.

I am not sure if it does or not, but yeah I think Night Shift is his anthology book of short stories.

Most independent film makers have a very small budget to work with so it is very nice of him to not charge them more.
