Alphabet - We call our ABCs the alphabet based on the fact that the first two letters of the Greek alphabet are alpha and beta = alphabet. Baker's Dozen - In the early days of England, the law allowed sellers to purchase 13 batches of bread for the price of 12. The 13th batch was their profit. There are actually two other theories about this phrase. C. O. D. - In 1841 a man asked an express man to deliver a package; but he wanted to be sure that it was paid for upon receipt. He wanted "cash on delivery". It was 20 years later when the abbreviation began to be used. Dandelion - The jagged edge of the dandelion's leaves were supposed to look like lion's teeth. The French for this is "dent de lion" or "tooth of the lion". Easy as Pie - The full expression is "easy as eating pie". Pie is considered to be something that is easy to eat and pleasant.
