The Great Spam Debate

I know we've talked about this before, but how do you REALLY feel about Spam? Don't hold back. I think the majority of you can't stomach the thought of eating Spam. But at the risk of not giving in to peer pressure, I have to say I really do like Spam at times. I like to slice it, fry it, and eat it on soft white bread with mayo, tomatoes, and lettuce. And if I don't have any tomatoes or lettuce, I like a little mustard on it instead of the mayo. Now, I don't care for it at breakfast or most any other way of cooking it, but to me, it's kind of like baloney. Every once in a while, I just can't resist some fried baloney (bologna?) on white bread, tomatoes, mayo, and lettuce. If that makes me a redneck, what can I say?

If the majority of us can't stand Spam, how come it's so popular? It's in every grocery store, right up there with canned chicken and potted meat and Vienna sausage. LOL I do like Spam and I like it on sandwiches, much like yours. I like to just eat it with a little smattering of mustard, along with a salad, too. I sometimes chop it up and fry it with some potatoes and scrambled eggs (all in the same skillet).

@1creekgirl I can't eat ham, but I do eat potted meat. it's probably not the best thing for me, but... Vienna sausage, when I can find it made with chicken, is a good snack!

The potatoes and eggs sound pretty good. I use canned chicken to make chicken croquettes and I like Deviled ham, but not potted meat. Once in a while I like Vienna sausages in hot pepper vinegar. We call them Vy eenies.

I spell it Bologna. Though I guess Baloney might work too. Spam... I haven't had it in absolute ages. Great with tomato soup and a grilled cheese.

@1creekgirl Yes, we say Buh-Lone-Y here, but if we want to be fancy we say Ba-Log-Nyuh. Okay, if we want to be silly we say it that way, atleast. I haven't had it quite awhile but have never put it in the grilled cheese. It might taste alright in with the grilled cheese though. Spam, potted meat, vienna sausage and liver mush are all things that I might eat every once in a very blue moon.

That sounds pretty good! I cook something similar with bacon, potatoes, onion, carrots, then top with cheese and sour cream.

@1creekgirl Not really or corned beef. I am not keen on processed meats. I think you can still buy it over here although I have not met anyone who likes it. But that has been fixed because you like it. I think it was sent over during the second world war when there was a great shortage of meat and everything was rationed.

I don't like your comparison to bologna at all. It seems to disrespect and insult bologna. I mean, I LOVE bologna, but I will leave that can of Spam on the shelf thank you very much. Just blech, and please do not ever insult bologna again ma'am.

I have never bought it, I do not know if they still carry it anymore. I remember my Gramma used to like to fry it up. It was enough when she was on her own after my Grandpa had his stroke and was living in a nursing home in town. She had to find smaller portions of foods that she could reheat, and that did the trick for her.

I think SPAM is disgusting. My ex-husband loves it though. One year I filled his Christmas stocking with every flavor of SPAM that the grocery store had. He was so happy.

I like Spam. It's so salty but so tasty when it's fried up. I like a little bit of ketchup and lightly toasted bread.

Ah, I knew we have similar tastes, even if many others don't recognize the unique flavor of Spam.

I like Spam. Here in Hawaii, on Oahu, we got a Spam Jam Festival...April 25, 2020 is the next one. I eat Spam and eggs with rice or tater tots, sandwich like you do, slice it up and stir fry for fried rice or adding it to noodle dish most of the time.

@1creekgirl My wife has fond memories of spam - I hate it. I I grew up among Peace Corps volunteers in Africa who were always bemoaning the fact that they couldn't get baloney. It sounded exotic and exciting to me till one of them got some and gave it to me.
