Some of my friends may remember the ordeal our older son’s father-in-law went through last February. The photo is of him and his wife and new granddaughter.
While on safari in Africa, he suffered a heart attack and later at the hospital in Nairobi, a stroke.
Once back in the USA, he had a stent inserted and later a defibrillator and pacemaker. His heart is doing well. However, his stroke caused many problems, and he continues to receive therapy.
He still can’t watch TV, read, or write, but his mind is as sharp as ever. His law firm paid him throughout his long recovery.
To top that, he had brought in one of their largest clients, and he is able to continue working. He has a team of attorneys that he advises and works from home.
We will see him tomorrow at the baby naming in NYC.
Thank goodness for modern science!

I've only known 2 people that had strokes and neither of them had the desire to try to learn. Hopefully he does have the desire @DianneN I've been told that strokes change how people think and relate to things that were once normal for them.

@rebelann I only knew a friend who’s mother had a stroke when we were teenagers. Her mother was paralyzed, couldn’t speak, and eventually passed away.
He is so lucky that he survived the heart attack and the stroke. His mind is as sharp as could be, and he is making progress in the other areas.
I suppose strokes affect different areas of the brain and everyone reacts differently.

I'm sorry to read about heart attack and strokes. I hope the father in law will stay alive for a long time, celebrate with the family, and see his grand children grow up.
I hope it was not the work that brought him pressure to his everyday life. It can cause problems.
How old was he when he started getting the heart attack and the stroke ?
Did he do some sport and ate healthy food and vegetables ?
What treatment is he going through ?

@DianneN we all better learn and apply more ways to reduce the chance for a heart attack and a stroke. We want to live strong.
So, I eat vegetables, tries to eat low sugar food...stay happy, peaceful. I need to do some exercise though.

Oy, such questions. I can’t answer them all. All I know that he is an easygoing man who was on one of his many fabulous vacations when he complained of aches in his chest and his arm in the middle of the Serengeti. His heart treatment is over, although he goes for regular checkups. He is getting therapy for his stroke issues. Thank you.

@LadyDuck Thankfully, he was in the hospital after his heart attack and the stroke was caught right then and there.
He looked and sounded great today. He can watch TV now, and is making progress with his reading and writing. It will take a long time, but he’s working hard.
