Your dog knows when you should be home

You can hear the happy and inquisitive bark of your dog as you get out of your car and walk to the door of your house. Their little paws scrabble across the floor, sometimes jumping on furniture in eagerness of your return home. Or maybe you have the dog that is already laying down at the door, he's already been there for a few minutes because he can sense when you come home. How? They can sniff it out. Odors dissipate over time, and our furry friends are attuned to the smells around them. Each hour that passes the smell gets weaker and weaker until it's barely there at all and certainly undetectable to the human nose. However, our canine companions know that when the scent gets to a certain weakness that their humans will be home soon. Source: TheBark

The cat of my neighbors shows up as soon as our car turns on our small road to get to our garage.

My neighbor has several cats but only one will come running when you call "hey kitty kitty". We have found her on our front porch before as well. Cats are such curious creatures and their domain is larger than just where they get fed. Aren't you allergic to cats?

@LadyDuck Cats are the animals I prefer as well. Dogs are nice but I find that they can sometimes be too much in your face or need more attention.

My crazy cat Sandy always knew when I was supposed to be home. He would be sitting in the window waiting for me to get home at the usual time that I would show up.

I bet cats have the same sense of passage of time but not all cats greet their owners like dogs will.

@ScribbledAdNauseum that is true but my Sandy had separation anxiety so he always was looking for me to get back home

Now that is interesting..Also, if a person usually comes home at a certain time, animals have that internal alarm that tells them what time it is.

Yes, exactly. The animals learn patterns basically.

@oahuwriter Yes, I agree. Pets are very good at sensing the good people and the bad people as well I met my Ex Boyfriends dog and he told me to be careful because the dog did not easily like people. His dog let me pet him almost right away. The ex told me that the dog would not even let his best friend pet him. I kept my mouth shut but was thinking that perhaps his best friend wasn't such a good person. As for my friends dogs, they also associate me with food and going outside because I have pet sat them before.

They really do. I have no pets of my own but even one of the neighbors cats seems happy to see me when I come home sometimes. A friend's animals are always happy to see me when I come to visit as well.

@ScribbledAdNauseum They can sense if you like them like we can sense things too. They must be heaven to pet! I don't have pets now for I can't afford them and our apt home landlord doesn't allow them.

We have Choey and Spot, a female and a male dog respectively. We do observe that behavior in them. They do welcome us when we arrive. We love seeing them waging their tails.

@Nakitakona I think so, but then it might be because they think "Oh there's another of the humans that feed me and let me out to go potty."

Dogs and cats know and you better be there at the usual time or you are in trouble with them.

Agreed! The look on their faces when you are not home right on time. A friend's dog will start whining when he hears his mama coming up the driveway, but he's usually already by the backdoor waiting for her.

I think that they do, but that they don't always act so pleased to see us.

So do our cats. And oh, do we scolded whenever we come back. They expect us to be home all the time now and wait upon them hand and foot.

Cats are such demanding creatures but they are too cute to stay mad at for long. I petsit for my friend's animals. If the cat's food bowl is empty (they have a self feeder) one of her cats will run into your arms and will purr and purr. I always say "You are just starved, aren't you?" and get up to feed them.
