Do not let me forget to give $20.00 to our waitress

It is interesting what you find out when you listen to chatter around you. The waitress at our favorite restaurant also does dessert catering. She talks about it with her other customers and she's talked about it with us as well. A week or so ago I asked her if the restaurant had baklava. She said that they did not but that she would be happy to make me one. I asked her how much it would cost me and she thought about it and said $20. That's for 8x8 pan of it. That's not too bad considering the cost of the ingredients. The baklava will be for this weekend with friends. Baklava is layers of filo dough with honey and nuts in between it. It is delicious.

Im not a fan of it, but i know how to make it. That sounds like a good deal for the ingredients and effort to make it.

Yeah, I was surprised she said $20.00. It might be that she has some of the ingredients already, I don't know. I have never made it myself.

@ScribbledAdNauseum A Greek restaurant and no baklava, that's very shocking!

Yes $20.00 for an 8x8 pan is really a wonderful deal. I was so surprised that she quoted $20.00! A friend and I were at a restaurant together recently and that restaurant didn't have the baklava. So when I went to my favorite restaurant later that day, I asked our waitress and she said they didn't have it either but she'd make it for me. Our favorite restaurant is owned by Greeks so I was surprised they didn't offer it.

@1hopefulman Well it's owned by Greeks and has several Greek inspired foods on the menu, but it's very much an "American" restaurant.

Baklava is indeed very tasty and sweet. It looks hard for me to make it, I don't want to try. Enjoy the baklava. It is very sweet $20 seems like a reasonable price.

@stringer321 I used to work for a Greek restaurant and ordered it every once in awhile for myself. We could eat one meal for free but we always had to pay for the baklava.

I think $20 is more than reasonable. I expected her to charge me more. Yes, I love baklava but it is one of those treats to be enjoyed every once in awhile only.

@nela13 You can find a recipe for filo dough as well. Or, maybe you can find it in the store. We can buy filo dough in the freezer section of our grocery store.
Chef John thinks it's way more fun to make your own phyllo dough sheets instead of buying them--and here he shows you how.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Greek eat baklava? Here the Indians are the ones who eat it and bring it to gathering.

It's the walnuts that drive up the price. I don't know if she'll make her own filo dough or whether she will buy it herself. She was showing us some of the cakes that she has made and she's really great at decorating. As for the baklava being delicious? She's Greek, I'm sure she's probably made plenty of them in her time.

I've never made it myself. I only wanted to know if they had it at the restaurant. I ordered one from her because she is a wonderful waitress and because it would be a nice treat for myself and my friends this weekend.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like baklava a lot, the Greek baklava is my favorite, but also the one made in North Africa with sugar syrup instead of honey is very good.

She usually charges $30. She charged me $20 which was just for the ingredients. She didn't skimp on the nuts either! What didn't you like about it?
