Uplifting Friday

I took this morning to do something I have always wanted to do. My granddaughter, the Ice Princess, shown above in the photo at World Climate Day, has been my inspiration. As young as she is, she has marched, picketed, and made her voice heard to make the world a better place, especially for women’s rights. So this morning, I volunteered my services to help battered women living in a group shelter. I won’t go into details, but it was so uplifting for me. Many were able to use my boxes of clothes, shoes, and handbags. I even brought them bags of Halloween candy. I hope I was able to make a small difference in their lives. Now that I’m home, I have to walk Doodles the cat. See you soon.

Love the picture. I'm glad you had a wonderful day. I'm sure those people will be able to use what you donated.

Thank you. The items I donated will be doled out by the powers that be. It wasn’t like a free for all, which is what I anticipated. lol I’m going to return a few times before we leave, and hopefully do it next year. My husband is so proud.

@just4him Thank you.. It was a bit heartbreaking, but I’m sure I brought smiles to lots of women today. That’s what was so uplifting. Anyone could drop off items, but talking and laughing was what they really needed.

I hope I helped. They were happy to talk, joke, and laugh, but I cried as I drove home. It was rather heartbreaking. I’m going back a few more times to help out before I get to hang out in the Florida sunshine.

It's great that she is speaking out for it. I worked in a shelter for battered women for a summer. It was more like a summer employment. It was quite interesting and also really sad.

@DianneN It's good that she's active. It's good that she wants her voice to be heard. It's so nice that you want to volunteer. It's not easy. Some of the stories of the women at the shelter I worked at were so heartbreaking, but I am so glad that I got to experience it. I don't regret doing it one bit.

She’s very active in women’s rights and the environment. I’m glad you got to experience what I experienced yesterday. It was heartbreaking, but I felt as though I brought a tiny ray of sunshine into their day. I did let loose and cry on my drive home. I will definitely return as much as possible before we leave here.

Thanks, Gary. I cried on the way home after chatting with some of those women. They all needed someone to talk to, but a couple of them tugged at my heartstrings. It was also good to make them smile and laugh.

I have been volunteering for over 65 years and it accounts for my long life because everything else I do are the wrong things--eating wrong--drinking too much--smoking, etc.!! Seriously, volunteering always makes the volunteer feel better!

Good for you! I have done my fair share of volunteering and serving as an officer and working on various various committees for years, too. We feel good and those who receive our help, no matter how much or how little, reap the rewards and benefits, too. Hats off to you!

I'm sure your gifts would have made a huge difference to those fortunate to benefit from them. Giving always benefits the donor I think just as much as the recipient.

I gave the goodies to the powers that be. They will divvy everything up. The only thing I actually put out was the candy, which they gobbled up as we talked, laughed, and joked around. It was very touching. I actually cried in the car ride home.
