I believe that Diwali begins tonight, with the new moon. It is the Hindu festival of lights, and celebrates (among other things) the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance". (I got that from Wikipedia.)
I am hoping to get Horse Jr. over here tonight to make a raft and candle for Astik, his (now) 5-year-old friend. I asked his (Astik's) daddy if they celebrate Diwali, and he said they did.
Do you celebrate Diwali?

@Freelanzer Do most people celebrate Diwali there? Or mostly just Hindus?

Not personally but I do acknowledge it as holidays in other cultures. Like Chinese New Year and Yule.

@Starmaiden I've spoken with several Sikhs and enjoy their perspective.

@TheHorse I lived in a mainly East Indian (Punjab) neighborhood in the south of Surrey, BC. They held their Diwali celebrations at the Sikh Temple across from where I lived. They also set off flares and fireworks at night during the holidays.

It is amazing how many festivals celebrate the victory of light over darkness. No, I do not celebrate Diwali, but I am aware of it.

@TheHorse you almost gave me a good laugh. Seriously, I thought that Diwali is for Buddhists.

@Alexandoy It may be! I a not a religious scholar. I asked Horse Jr.'s 5-year-old friend's dad whether he celebrated Diwali (he's Indian). He said he did.
