Meijer Says "Thank You, Kroger!"

THE mega-chain of grocery stores in my neck of the woods is Cincinnati-based Kroger. I was in northern Kentucky not too long ago and passed three Kroger stores ON THE SAME STREET within five miles of one another. When my mom and aunt were alive I'd do their grocery shopping for them, given that they weren't able to get out and about. One day my aunt called and asked if I was going to Kroger, and I replied, "No, honey, I can't afford Kroger's 'low prices' anymore." Add to those overpriced low prices (an example: when I drink soft drinks at home I drink Diet Rite, because it has no sodium, no caffeine, and no aspartame...well, it's $1.79 at Kroger, while Meijer sells it for $1.39 and Wally World sells it for as little as $1!) the fact that they have started charging a fee for you to get cash back at the checkout if you use your debit card. They claim this is because they are incurring fees. Yes, they are. However, they also get fees from credit cards -- anywhere from 1.5% to 3.5%, and they do NOT charge a customer extra for using a credit card. That's right, kids, I can walk in there, get $100 worth of groceries, pull out my American Express, and Kroger will gleefully eat the 3.5% fee that American Express charges. So, on GP (General Principles), I took my grocery list to Meijer today. I came home with my hundred bucks in groceries and cash back with no fee. Meijer, no doubt, says, "Thank you, Kroger!" for the extra business the Kroger fee policy is throwing Meijer's way. An appropriate song:

We don't have Kroger or Meijer in Florida, as Publix is king here. I've heard many, many people from up north who winter here in Florida say that Publix would kick both of their butts if they ever decided to open stores up north.

I think Publix has migrated as far north as Nashville. When we lived in Daytona I think my folks shopped at A&P, simply because it was a block and a half away.

@FourWalls I wasn’t aware that A&P was in Florida either. Publix is definitely king here, but we also have Winn-Dixie, and a few Albertsons left. Then the trendy stores like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Fresh Market.

Many of these other grocery stores survive on perception and loyalty alone—but certainly they COULD get more business if they really wanted it. Stores like Meijer and Walmart, and in my old neck of the woods, Wisconsin, like Woodman's are really making a difference. It's nice that Woodman's is also family and employee owned. By the way, a Woodman's is one of the biggest grocery stores I have ever seen in my life. Even Meijers is smaller compared, but then Meijers also sells other stuff much like Walmart does. That being said, I only know of Meijers. I have never actually been inside one.

Meijer’s is Wally World, just more expensive and a little cleaner.

@FourWalls Oh. I did not know it was more expensive. I guess if people want a similar but better experience than Walmart they are willing to pay a bit of a premium? I do know that Meijers is not having any trouble being profitable, growing and expanding.

We don't have a Kroger or a Meijer. We have an Aldi, Publix, Harris Teeter, Bi-Lo, Walmart, Target and Food Lion. I mostly go to Food Lion. Although I did go to Bi-Lo so I could get some litter and groceries.

I am surprised the Great American Ballpark isn't called Kroger Field.

Guess Great American Insurance outbid them for the naming rights.

We don't have any Krogers anymore; but we do have a brand new Meijers which is a little too far for regular shopping.

Dollar General charges a fee for cash back. I do not do it there. I am not sure if Aldi does or not. It has been a while since I have felt I could take any cash back. I shop the Kroger/Dillons stores only for certain things. You have to have a mental idea of what is best where, and the time to go there.

It is nice to go to a grocery store where the price fits your budget. The funny thing is that the Kroger in Lake Charles closed their doors this past summer after a Wal Mart opened up nearby.
